  • Cedar buys Quartermaster Plaza in Philadelphia

    Port Washington, N.Y. — Cedar Realty Trust has completed the acquisition of Quartermaster Plaza in Philadelphia. The 456,000-sq.-ft. grocery-anchored shopping center is 98% occupied and anchored by a BJ’s Wholesale Club.

    Cedar acquired the center for $92.3 million, including the assumption of $53.4 million of fixed rate debt. The company expects ultimately to fund deal with proceeds anticipated from asset sales. Pending those sales, Cedar will use it existing credit facility.

  • Safeway explores sale; reports net income jump from Canada exit

    Pleasanton, Calif. – Safeway Inc. is exploring a sale of the company as it reports substantial increases in net income due to its exit from the Canadian market, and smaller increases in net sales for the fourth quarter and fiscal year 2014. Although the discussions for a sale are ongoing, the company said it has not reached an agreement on a transaction, and there can be no assurance that these discussions will lead to an agreement or a completed transaction.  

  • BJ’s selects PromoWorks to run demo biz

    BJ’s Wholesale Club is outsourcing and expanding its product demonstration program with the help of Crossmark’s PromoWorks division.

    Plans call for PromoWorks to manage, enhance and ultimately expand the company’s demo and events program. BJ’s current demo and events staff, made up of approximately 1,400 employees, will be given priority to apply for the demo program with PromoWorks, which plans to grow the current program by more than 25% or about 500 jobs, the companies said it a joint statement.

  • Levin to manage The Shops at 5 in Plymouth, Mass.

    North Plainfield, N.J. — The Shops at 5 in Plymouth, Mass., has named Levin Management its exclusive managing agent.

    The 420,000-sq. ft. open-air shopping center takes its name from its location off Route 3 at Exit 5 on Long Pond Road. Anchor tenants include BJ’s Wholesale Club, TJ Maxx/HomeGoods and Kohl’s. Other national names include The Sports Authority, PetSmart, Pier 1 Imports, Panera Bread and IHOP.

    Increased traffic at Costco helped fueled sales in the first quarter of 2014.

  • Lots of traffic, but less spending at Costco

    A strong increase in shopper traffic at Costco during November translated to a 3% increase in same-store sales, excluding gas, at U.S. locations during the four-week November reporting period which ended December 1.

    Costco didn’t comment specifically on Thanksgiving weekend sales during a recorded call to recap results, but the company did say that traffic increased a little more than 4% while average transaction sizes were down slightly. Costco and its direct competitors Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale Club were closed on Thanksgiving Day.

    This year, it seems that you can’t turn on the TV or read the news without seeing that another store is opening on Thanksgiving. Some believe Black Friday is fading away as more retailers choose to open early to compete with other shopping options such as online sales. I don’t think that Black Friday is going away, but I do think that it is evolving to best serve the needs of the consumer. Any retailer that is going to be successful long-term has to evolve, too.
