  • Callison appoints new chairman and CEO

    Seattle -- Callison announced today that John Jastrem has been appointed as chairman and CEO of Callison. He replaces James P. Rothwell, who is stepping down as CEO and returning to his previous role as principal in the firm running its commercial design practice. Callison’s chairman Robert J. Tindall, is leaving the firm.

    Jastrem has served on Callison’s Holdings board (Callison Architecture Holding, LLC and Subsidiaries) since 2006 and as its executive chairman since August 2010.

  • Target sets sights on Canada

    MINNEAPOLIS - Just days after announcing 2011 U.S. expansion plans, Target announced an acquisition in Canada that will enable it to open between 100 and 150 stores during the next four years. The company announced that it has agreed to pay C$1.825 billion to purchase from Zellers Inc., a subsidiary of the Hudson's Bay Company, the leasehold interests in up to 220 sites currently operated by Zellers Inc. This transaction will allow Target to open its first Target stores in Canada beginning in 2013. 

  • Walmart promotes NYC efforts with new website

    New York City -- Though Walmart's desire to enter New York City is nothing new, its latest push shows that attitudes toward the retailer opening stores in the Big Apple are changing -- in Walmart's favor.

    The company recently launched WalmartNYC.com, a "community forum for customers, associates, stakeholders and public officials who want to learn more about Walmart as it continues to evaluate opportunities across the city," according to a company press release.

  • New competition comes to Canada

    Walmart Canada has a few years to get ready for the arrival of Target following yesterday’s major announcement that its arch rival would be heading north of the border via an acquisition. That is the same strategy Walmart employed all the way back in 1994 when it bought 122 former Woolco stores. Walmart now operates 323 stores in Canada, and by the time Target gets around to opening its first units in 2013 that figure will probably be closer to 400.

  • Office Depot buying Svanstroms Gruppen

    Boca Raton, Fla. -- Office Depot is buying Swedish office supply company Svanstroms Gruppen in order to expand its presence there.

    Terms were not disclosed.

    Office Depot first entered the Swedish market in 2004 through a strategic alliance with AGE Kontor & Data AB.

    "We've been successful in this market and see continued growth and high potential in the region," said Charlie Brown, president of Office Depot's international division, said in a statement on Tuesday.

  • Target to open 21 stores and remodel 400 units in 2011

    Minneapolis -- Target is opening 21 stores across 12 states, the retailer announced Tuesday.

    Among the openings include five stores in California, a third store in Hawaii and a SuperTarget in Minnesota.

    “Target takes great pride in designing stores that meet the needs of our guests and the communities we serve,” said John Griffith, Target executive VP. “With the addition of an expanded fresh food assortment, our new stores will offer guests everything they need in one convenient location.”

  • Disney to debut interactive store design in 25 locations in 2011

    Pasadena, Calif. -- Disney Store will open more than 25 new and remodeled locations around the globe in 2011. The stores will feature the company’s updated store design, which features an array of interactive and immersive experiences. The company ultimately plans to transform all its 350+ locations to the new concept.

    “Guests told us that we brought the magic back to Disney Store with the launch of our new design, and they responded by staying in the stores longer and purchasing more,” said Jim Fielding, president, Disney Stores Worldwide.
