  • Report: Online giant has its eye on some French supermarkets

    Amazon is exploring its next grocery opportunity — but not in the United States.    The online giant is looking for physical store locations in France, especially Paris. French newspaper Le Monde, which first broke the story, said Amazon has approached various French supermarket operators — including Groupe Casino, Intermarche and Systeme U — about setting up distribution deals or making an acquisition in the country, according to CNBC.  
  • Refinanced Boulder center opens with 90% occupancy

    NewMark Merrill Mountain States this week issued a double-barreled press release: It closed on a $62 million refinancing of the Village at the Peaks and opened the Boulder-area center at close to 90% capacity.   The $100 million, 442,000-sq.-ft. had been under development for five years in a public/private partnership between NewMark Merrill and the city of Longmont. New financing was provided by Allianz Real Estate of America.

    Amazon is about to put down some new roots in New York City — and is hunting for new employees to support the operation.  
  • Walgreens gets regulatory OK to buy Rite Aid stores

    Walgreens Boots Alliance secured regulatory approval for a deal to buy stores from Rite Aid Corp. after a reduction in the number of stores and price. The deal will still enable Walgreens to dramatically increase its store footprint, giving it a total of about 10,000 U.S. locations.   
  • Bloomberg: Walgreens revising Rite Aid deal to gain FTC signoff

    Walgreens Boots Alliance is reportedly tweaking its previously announced deal with Rite Aid Corp.  
  • Phillips Edison buys Chicagoland center

    Phillips Edison & Company has acquired a center anchored by Mariano’s grocery in the Chicago suburb of Hoffman Estates.   The 159,443-sq.-ft. Hoffman Village was left two-thirds vacant when Dominick’s closed in 2011, but the emergence of Mariano’s Fresh Market, owned and operated by Roundy’s, returned occupancy back to 94%, according to former owner NewQuest.  
  • Experiential retailer in store closings

    High-end bath, kitchen and appliance retailer PIrch is relying on its California roots for future growth.  
  • Done deal: Staples goes private

    Staples is done trading on Nasdaq.   Sycamore Partners announced that it has completed its acquisition of the office supply giant. Under the terms of the deal, which was announced in June, Staples was acquired by the private equity firm in a transaction valued at approximately $6.9 billion.   
  • Glimcher named CEO of Starwood

    Michael P. Glimcher, who stepped down as the chief executive of WP Glimcher last year, has been named CEO of Starwood Retail Partners. He succeeds Scott Wolstein, who has taken on a new role as senior adviser to the parent company, Starwood Capital Group.  
  • Nordstrom edging closer to going private

    One of the nation's best-performing department stores retailers may soon be out of the public arena.    Nordstrom family members are close to selecting Leonard Green & Partners to help fund a buyout of their namesake department store, reported CNBC, which cited people familiar with the matter.
