  • Increased number of shoppers intend to spend more for holidays

    New York -- A report released Wednesday by the International Council of Shopping Centers and Goldman Sachs found that consumers are more willing to spend this holiday season.

    According to the 2012 Holiday Spending Intentions Survey, 19% of consumers plan to spend more (and 5% plan to spend substantially more) on holiday gifts this year versus last year.  This is the highest percentage of consumers reporting they intend to increase spending over the previous holiday season since ICSC began asking the question in 2004.

  • NRF report: Sandy and fiscal cliff send October retail sales downward

    Washington, D.C. -- The National Retail Federation said Wednesday that, for the first time in three months, retail sales ticked down slightly as consumers cooled discretionary spending in the face of inclement weather and uncertainty in Washington.

    October retail sales (excluding automobiles, gas stations and restaurants) decreased 0.3% seasonally adjusted from September yet increased 3.9% unadjusted year-over-year.



  • Sears Canada narrows loss in Q3

    Toronto -- Sears Canada Inc. reported Tuesday a loss of $21.85 million, compared with a loss of $44 million in the same period last year.

    Revenue dropped 6.8% to $1.04 billion, and same-store sales slid 5.7%.

     

  • Consumers increasingly optimistic about economy

    New York -- Experian Marketing Services said Monday that its Consumer Expectation Index shows an increasing optimism about the economy. According to the CEI, U.S. consumers’ forward-looking view of the economy is at its highest level since the onset of the recession. During the first half of 2012, the average CEI figure was 92.7, which is above the index’s average of the first six months for each year dating back to 2008. The 2012 figure measured eight points above those for the first half of 2008 and one point over those for the first half of 2011.

  • Target to start Black Friday sale a day early

    New York -- Target plans to open at 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day to kick of its Black Friday promotional efforts and will follow up with additional deals that become available at 4 a.m.

    The company is also rewarding its REDcard holders by allowing them early access to select Black Friday sale items at Target.com.

  • Wegman and Smucker honored by GMA

    The Grocery Manufacturers Association named Danny Wegman and Timothy Smucker as the 2013 inductees into the trade group’s Hall of Achievement.

    Danny Wegman serves as CEO of Wegmans Food Markets and Tim Smucker serves as chairman of the J.M. Smucker Company. The pair will receive the Hall of Achievement honor when GMA gathers in Scottsdale, Arizona on January 19 for the annual Chairman’s Lecture held in conjunction with the Food Marketing Institute’s midwinter conference.

  • OfficeMax offering free in-store services to hurricane victims

    Naperville, Ill. -- OfficeMax today announced it is extending support to the thousands of people still without electricity by providing free in-store charging stations, fax, scan and email services to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy stay connected and get back to business. The retailer also partnered with nonprofit AdoptAClassroom.org to launch the Hurricane Relief for Teachers (HuRT) program to help restore damaged classrooms along the east coast.

  • J.C. Penney to celebrate Black Friday with its ‘only sale’ of the year

    Dallas -- J.C. Penney announced it will celebrate Black Friday with its only sale of the year. The retailer said more than 1,100 J.C. Penney stores will open their doors at 6 a.m. on Black Friday to offer low prices on gifts for the entire family — with no coupons or rebates required. Associates throughout the store will be equipped with mobile checkout devices.
