  • NRF comments on Walmart pay hike for associates

    Washington, D.C. -- The National Retail Federation credited the “power of the marketplace” in Walmart’s decision to increase wages of approximately 500,000 full-time and part-time associates in April to $9 an hour, which is well above the Federal minimum wage.

  • Office Depot exec joins Dollarama board

    Canadian discounter Dollarama has turned to an Office Depot executive to guide the company through expansion plans in 2015.

    The company announced that Elisa D. Garcia has been appointed as an independent director and member of the nominating and governance committee of the corporation. Garcia's appointment expands the company’s board of directors to 10 directors, seven of whom are independent.

  • Retail CIOs: Managing data security top priority in 2015, followed by omnichannel

    Washington, D.C. - Retail CIOs agree that security and digital innovation are top priorities for 2015, according to a new report by the NRF and Forrester Research.

    The study, the Retail CIO Agenda 2015: Secure and Innovate, finds that managing data security is the most urgent focus area for retail CIOs, with 97% of respondents placing it at the top of their 2015 priority lists.  

  • Whole Foods group aims to collect $5M in 42 days

    Whole Foods is putting its motto -- whole foods, whole people, whole planet -- to the test with a new initiative to alleviate poverty through microcredit.

    The retailer is partnering with its own Whole Planet Foundation on an effort to raise $5 million in 42 days to fund microlending programs worldwide.

  • President Obama, Apple CEO, retailers to speak at Summit on cybersecurity

    Washington, D.C. – Assorted advocacy groups and professional associations, including the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Merchant Financial Cyber Partnership, are urging the White House to take steps to improve cybersecurity for retail transactions. The public call comes as President Obama convenes a daylong Cybersecurity Summit at Stanford University on Feb. 13. The summit, which will include a keynote speech by the president, is part of a renewed drive to combat cyber hackers.

  • Sales outlook keeps getting better for retailers

    Retail sales will accelerate in 2015 and grow at the fastest pace since 2011, according to a recent forecast from the National Retail Federation.

    The trade group said Retail sales (excluding automobiles, gas stations, and restaurants) will increase 4.1% in 2015, up from 3.5% in 2014. The increase would mark the biggest annual growth since 2011 when retail sales for the year increased 5.1%. Non-store sales in 2015 are expected to grow between 7% and 10%.

    Williams-Sonoma is leveraging the brand equity of a renowned culinary competition, not to mention famed celebrity chef Thomas Keller, to attract more foodies to its stores.

    The retailer has been hosting events at stores across the country celebrating Team USA after its medal win at the prestigious Bocuse d’Or International Culinary Competition in January.
