  • Nordstrom third quarter consistent with full-year outlook

    Nordstrom’s third quarter results were consistent with its full-year outlook. Strong direct sales growth and improving trends in the Rack mitigated softer sales trends in full-line stores.

    The company’s Anniversary Sale, which is historically its largest sale event of the year, fell in the second quarter this year, rather than in the second and third quarters as it did last year. The estimated impact of this event shift increased earnings per diluted share in the second quarter but reduced them in this quarter by approximately $0.06.

  • Under Armour to acquire fitness technology company

    Under Armour is in the process of acquiring MapMyFitness, a fitness technology company powering one of the world's largest digital fitness communities.

    Under Armour will leverage the fitness platform to expand its digital capabilities. MapMyFitness has one of the largest connected fitness communities in the world and offers a diverse suite of websites and mobile applications under its flagship brands MapMyRun and MapMyRide. Utilizing GPS and other advanced technologies, MapMyFitness provides users with the ability to map, record and share their workouts.

  • Another first for Starbucks: Store on a train

    New York -- Starbucks Coffee Company and Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) on Thursday unveiled the first-ever Starbucks store on a train. The train’s maiden voyage will take place on the train line running from Geneva Airport to St. Gallen in Switzerland on Nov. 21 at 6:36 a.m.

  • Prada renews early at SL Green’s 724 Fifth Avenue

    New York — Prada has renewed the lease for its New York City flagship store at 724 Fifth Avenue, according to SL Green Realty Corp. and Jeff Sutton, a partnership that owns the building.

    The early lease renewal — the existing lease will not expire until 2017 — will keep one of the world’s iconic fashion and accessory houses at the prime Manhattan location through 2028. Prada occupies 15,540 sq. ft. on four levels, plus another 5,200 sq. ft. of office space on the fifth floor of the building.

  • Gordon Bros. appoints co-presidents to bolster retail division

    Gordon Brothers Group, a global advisory, restructuring and investment firm specializing in the retail, consumer products, industrial and real estate sectors, has named Robert E. Grosskopf and Richard P. Edwards as co-presidents of the retail division.

    They will jointly assume responsibility for the division's growth strategy while overseeing all client engagements and daily operations.

  • Ikea becomes largest retail wind energy investor in Canada

    Burlington, Ontario -- Ikea Canada announced it has purchased a 46 megawatt wind farm in Pincher Creek, Alberta. The 20-turbine wind farm will be the largest owned by a Canadian retailer and is expected to generate 161 gigawatt hours (GWh) each year, which is more than double the total energy consumption of Ikea Canada. The project is currently being constructed by global wind and solar company Mainstream Renewable Power and is expected to be fully operational in fall 2014.

  • Kohl’s misses as Q3 earnings fall 18%; lowers full-year outlook

    Menomonee Falls, Wis. – Kohl’s Corp. missed Wall Street forecasts with a generally poor showing in the third quarter of fiscal 2013 that saw the retailer’s net income fell 18% to $177 million from $215 million a year ago. The chain lowered its full-year earnings forecast.

    In addition, net sales dropped 1% to $4.44 billion, from $4.49 billion. Same-store sales fell 1.6%.
