  • Supervalu snags former OfficeMax exec

    EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Supervalu has appointed former OfficeMax executive Bruce Besanko as its EVP and CFO, effective August 7.

    Besanko served as EVP of finance, CFO and chief administrative officer for OfficeMax, and is credited with strengthening the company’s balance sheet and transforming business-to-business and retail segments for one of the leading global office supply companies following his appointment in 2009.

  • Holiday shifts impact Michaels Q2

    IRVING, Texas — Holiday shifts adversely affected quarter-to-date performance at Michaels Stores, which reported net sales of $631 million for the nine-week period ending July 6, a decrease of 0.1% from $631.8 million for the comparable period last fiscal year. 

    Same-store sales for the same fiscal period declined 2.7%. The company's quarter-to-date performance was also adversely affected by the timing of media activity due to the impact of the 53rd week in fiscal 2012. However, as a result of the shifts, the company has seen improvement in July sales performance.

  • P&G elevates Barron Witherspoon to VP, industry affairs

    CINCINNATI — Procter & Gamble has appointed Barron Witherspoon as the company’s VP of industry affairs.  

    Witherspoon has a 27-year history in consumer packaged goods at P&G, beginning his career in field advertising and securing positions of increasing responsibility in customer business development across multiple categories and customers and global regions. 

    He has served on numerous association boards and is actively involved in helping to leverage diversity across the company and the industry.

  • Trend watch: more favorable indicators of housing health

    Flooring specialist Lumber Liquidators reported a 14.9% second quarter same store sales increase and became the latest company to benefit from a resurgent housing and home improvement market.

    Lumber Liquidators, operator of 300 stores, said total sales increased 22.2% to $257.1 million from $210.3 million during the second quarter ended June 30. Gross margins expanded to 41.3% from 37.3%, reflective of a reduced sourcing costs, higher prices and improved operational efficiencies, which translated to significant profit growth. Net income surged 67.7% to $20.4 million.

  • Loblaw investments bolster its Q2

    Loblaw Companies Limited — which recently announced its plans to <a href="http://loblaw/ investments bolster its Q2 Loblaw Companies Limited, which announced its plans to acquire Shoppers Drug Mart for C$12.4 billion in cash and stock, reported higher earnings and revenue in the second quarter of fiscal 2013 as compared to the same period in fiscal 2012. Lolbaw’s net earnings for the quarter totaled USD $173.2 million, up 14% from $151.8 million. The retailer reported revenues of $7.31 billion, a 2% increase from $7.18 billion a year earlier. Same-store sales improved 1.1%.

  • Meijer offers bright spot in bankrupt city

    GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — As lawyers face off in the first battle over Detroit’s bankruptcy bid, Meijer is preparing to open its first store in the economically depressed city at the Gateway Marketplace shopping center.

  • PepsiCo ‘pleased’ with Q2 performance

    PURCHASE, N.Y. — PepsiCo reported net revenue of $16.8 billion for the second quarter of 2013, a 2% increase from $16.4 billion for the same quarter last year.

    Structural changes, principally the refranchising of the company's beverage operations in Vietnam and China, negatively impacted reported net revenue performance by nearly 1% and foreign exchange translation had a 1.5% unfavorable impact in the quarter. Adjusted to exclude the impact of foreign currency translation and structural changes, revenue grew 4.2%.

  • Study: Trader Joe’s and Publix tops among grocery chains

    Boulder, Colo. -- Trader Joe’s is North America’s favorite grocery store based on customer satisfaction, according to a new study of 6,600 consumers conducted by Market Force Information. Publix Super Markets and Whole Foods Market rounded out the top three. All three received high marks for courteous staff, inviting atmosphere and high-quality produce. Hy-Vee also scored well on those measures.

  • Starbucks entering yogurt business in deal with Dannon

    Seattle -- Starbucks Coffee Company is entering the yogurt business. The company announced it has entered into a strategic agreement with the makers of Dannon to offer a jointly created and developed selection of specialty yogurt products in participating Starbucks stores and in grocery channels.

  • Randolph Mall drafts Dunham’s Sports

    Chattanooga, Tenn. — CBL & Associates Properties has announced that Dunham’s Sports has leased a 60,200-sq.-ft. space in Randolph Mall in Asheboro. N.C. Scheduled to open for the 2013 holiday shopping season, the new Dunham’s will replace Dillard’s, which closed in late July.

    Belk, J.C. Penney, Sears and Cinemark theatre anchor the 380,000-sq.-ft. regional Randolph Mall.
