  • Bon-Ton bolsters board

    The Bon-Ton Stores has elected Daniel T. Motulsky to its board of directors.

    Motulsky was a managing director and global head of consumer & retail of Lazard from 2000 to June 2014, having joined the firm in 1998. Lazard is a global financial advisory and asset management firm that engages in investment banking, asset management and other financial services primarily with institutional clients.

  • ‘Backoff’ virus latest POS threat

    Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is warning retailers about a new, nearly indetectable computer virus known as “Backoff” that poses a threat to POS systems. According to an advisory from Homeland Security, most antivirus software cannot recognize Backoff.

  • RadioShack investor urges lender repayment, says it will help

    New York -- A report by Bloomberg said that investor BlueCrest Capital Management is urging RadioShack to repay the lenders that are blocking plans to shutter stores.

    The electronics retailer announced last March that it would close 1,100 stores; it later reduced the number of closures to 200 per year for three years after negotiations with lenders failed.

    BlueCrest said it supported the company's decision to shut stores to stem losses and was willing to provide financing, Bloomberg said.
     

     

  • Susser Holdings to vote on Energy Transfer Partners purchase Aug. 28

    Corpus Christi, Texas -- Susser Holdings Corp. has set a date for a special meeting of its stockholders to consider and vote on the previously announced proposed acquisition of Susser Holdings by Energy Transfer Partners L.P. (ETP) and certain other matters. The special meeting will be held on Aug. 28, at Susser's corporate offices.

  • Rakuten launches global scholars program

    E-commerce site Rakuten is expanding its corporate social responsibility efforts with several scholarship opportunities in Japan and around the world.

    The cornerstone of its new efforts is its Global Citizens Summit, which will bring together 24 students from around the world at Boston’s Harvard Faculty Club from Aug. 2 to 9. The summit is being hosted with assistance from nonprofit Global Citizens Initiative, which works to build leaders among students, and the participants will meet throughout the week to discuss global issues.

  • Whole Foods to expand loyalty, marketing, home delivery

    Austin, Texas – Whole Foods plans to expand its loyalty, marketing and home delivery programs. In a conference call with investors, co-CEO Walter Robb said Whole Foods will launch its first national marketing campaign in fall 2014, with a focus on how the retailer is better and different than its competitors.

    Babies “R” Us has partnered with Medela, a manufacturer of breast pumps and postnatal supplies, to provide the Medela Breast Pump Rental Service to parents nationwide.

    Customers visiting any Babies “R” Us store across the country will be able to rent the Medela Hospital-Grade Symphony Double Electric Breast Pump for 30, 60 or 90 days. The program remains flexible, with the opportunity to extend a rental after 30 days.
