    Net income surged 28% to $28.47 million from $22.18 million in the same period a year earlier. Net sales soared 33% to $277.63 million, from $209.45 million. Same-store sales climbed 15.6%. Higher pretax income helped boost net income totals, while the opening of nine new stores and extremely strong growth in furniture and mattress sales helped drive overall sales growth.

    99 Cents Only Stores named Christopher Laurence as the company's interim CFO, treasurer and secretary. Laurence replaces Frank Schools, who resigned to pursue other opportunities.

    Laurence joins 99 Cents Only Stores from ThreeSixty Group, a product development and sourcing company for consumer product brands and retailers. He served as its CEO for the past six years and during his 12 tenure also served in a number of key management positions.

    To date Loblaw has donated more than $1 million and 323,000 pounds of food across Canada during the Extra Helping Food Drive, and is more than halfway to achieving its 2014 goal of $1.8 million and 1.8 million pounds of food.

    Newfoundlanders have helped to replenish food bank supplies in the province with $27,721 and 26,940 pounds of food donated by customers and colleagues at Dominion, SaveEasy and nofrills stores across Newfoundland and Labrador during the Extra Helping Spring Food Drive of 2014.

  • FTC clears way for merger between Men’s Wearhouse and Jos. A. Bank

    New York -- The Federal Trade Commission on Friday determined that the merger between Men’s Wearhouse and Jos. A. Bank does not violate antitrust laws. The commission had been conducting a detailed review of the proposed $1.8 billion deal.

    The Men’s Wearhouse expects to close on its acquisition for Jos. A. Bank in the next 30 days after Men's Wearhouse agreed to pay $65 a share for Jos. A. Bank earlier this year in a deal valued at $1.8 billion that will create a company with more than 1,700 stores and pro forma annual sales of $3.5 billion.

  • Wal-Mart promotes Broader to new exec role in international division

    Bentonville, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores announced the promotion of Shelley Broader, currently president and CEO of Walmart Canada, to executive VP, president and CEO of Walmart EMEA, effective June 1. In her new role, she will lead Walmart's retail operations and oversee business development in Europe, the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa and Canada and will report directly to David Cheesewright, president and CEO, Walmart International.
