  • Canadian Tire pumps up Q1 profit

    Toronto – Canadian Tire Corp. pumped up profit in the first quarter of fiscal 2015, expanding net income 17% to $88.3 million from $75.6 million a year earlier. Improved margins helped inflate net income totals.

    Falling petroleum costs helped deflate revenue 2% to $2.51 billion from $2.57 billion, although consolidated same-store sales rose 5.5%. Same-store sales grew at all core retailer banners, including lifts of 4.7% at Canadian Tire, 8.6% at FGL Sports and 5.5% at Mark’s.

  • Simon Property opens expansion of Las Vegas North Premium Outlets

    Las Vegas -- Simon Property Group, a global leader in retail real estate, announced that it has opened a 25-store expansion of Las Vegas North Premium Outlets.

    The center is now one of the largest in the country with 175 stores. The expansion features designer and name brands, including Neiman Marcus Last Call Studio, Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th, AG Adriano Goldschmied, AllSaints, Bally, Canali, Catimini, CH Carolina Herrera, Citizen, Helmut Lang, John Varvatos, Rag & Bone, Under Armour, and Vera Bradley.

  • Dillard's posts drop in same store sales

    Dillard’s joined Macy’s, Kohl’s and JCPenney in reporting lackluster results as a result of weak sales in the first quarter.

    For the first quarter ended May 2, Dillard’s reported of $109.6 million, or $2.66 a share, compared with $111.7 million, or $2.56 a share, in the prior year quarter. Same-store sales declined 1%.

  • Survey: American consumers like giving at the register

    Austin, Texas – Americans are known for their generosity, and that stereotype holds true when they go shopping. A new survey of 3,030 U.S. consumers across all ages by social responsibility firm Good Scout, “Change at the Checkout,” shows that 71% of respondents have donated to charity at the register.

    Consumers surveyed listed “charity brand recognition” as the number one reason they feel compelled to give to charity at the register. The second leading reason is personal connection to the cause.

  • Sephora picks JD.com for Chinese launch

    Sephora is looking to increase online sales by expanding its omnichannel capabilities in China with a new flagship store on JD.com.

    Sephora says its JD.com store will be the largest cosmetics store on JD.com's platform, featuring over 1,200 items from more than 70 leading international cosmetic brands, including Dior, Guerlain, Givenchy, Benefit and Kenzoki, among dozens of others.

  • Staples expands its presence abroad

    Staples is accelerating its pursuit of growth opportunities abroad even as the company awaits regulatory approval of a proposed merger with Office Depot.

    Staples has announced a partnership with Bidvest Waltons, South Africa’s leading office products company, and Dacris, a major distributor of office supplies in Romania.

  • Cracker Barrel to roll out QSR seating solution

    Lebanon, Tenn. - Cracker Barrel Old Country Store will roll out the QSR Partners DineTime solution at all locations nationwide, with plans to complete the installment by the end of summer 2015. DineTime offers features such as wait list management, online reservations, customer data collection, a mobile customer app and more.

  • NRF: Senate should renew Trade Promotion Authority

    Washington, D.C. – The National Retail Federation (NRF) is publicly criticizing the Senate for blocking consideration of the Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities and Accountability Act, which would renew Trade Promotion Authority. Trade Promotion Authority is legislation from Congress outlining objectives and oversight for trade negotiations between the U.S. and other countries.
