    Retailers are finding unlikely camaraderie in their quest for greater market share: their competitors. With a handful of e-commerce giants continuing their stronghold on consumer pocketbooks, this year’s RILA (Retail Industry Leaders Association) Retail Supply Chain Conference allowed ‘big box’ and traditional retail leaders to come together in pursuit of new ways to stay ahead.   
  • Next-gen logistics lab opens in China

    A new innovation lab is primed to benefit one of the top players in China’s e-commerce marketplace.   Zebra Technologies, Digital China and Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com, which Walmart owns a 12% stake in, have joined forces to develop a state-of-the art facility entitled the "IoT + E-commerce Logistics Lab.”   
  • Apparel retailer expanding outlet store concept after terrible Q4

    Express Inc.’s profit plunged 59% in its fourth quarter amid increased discounting and weak mall traffic.    In reporting its fourth quarter results, the apparel retailer said it plans to improve its merchandise mix through a more curated selection.   Express’ profit decreased 59% to $22.8 million in the quarter ended Jan. 28, in line with expectations, as earnings per share fell to $0.29, from $0.67 in the year-ago period.   .

  • Retailer continues Canadian expansion

    Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th announced plans for two new stores in Canada.   The retailer plans to open a location at CF Markville in Markham, Ontario. The approximately 27,000 sq. ft. store is scheduled to open in 2018.    “Ontario is a key market for Saks Off 5th in Canada and we’re excited to continue to grow our presence there,” commented Jonathan Greller, president, Saks Off 5th and Gilt, which are part of Hudson’s Bay Company.  
  • New grocery retailer expanding

    A new retailer aimed at Hispanic customers is expanding its footprint in South Florida.    Fresco y Más on March 8 opened five stores in Miami, and Hialeah, Florida, bringing its total store count to 11 locations. The banner is the latest concept from Southeastern Grocers, parent company of Bi-Lo, Harveys and Winn-Dixie.  
  • Urban Outfitters posts double-digital sales growth in online channel

    Urban Outfitters Inc. ended its fiscal year more or less on target.    The retailer on Tuesday reported net income of $64.3 million, or 55 cents a share, just one cent shy of analysts’ estimates, and down from $72.9 million, or 61 cents a share, in the year ago period.   Total net sales rose 2% to $1.03 billion, matching Street forecasts.  
  • Walgreens looks to speed up Rite Aid merger

    Walgreens Boots Alliance is considering a move that would force the Federal Trade Commission to vote on its planned merger with Rite Aid within 30 days.   Walgreens is considering declaring that it has “certified compliance” in its application, which would mean that the drugstore chain believes it has given regulators substantially all the information they need to make a decision, The New York Post reported.
  • Casual dining chain jumps into online ordering game

    Cracker Barrel Old Country Store’s mission is to “keep things simple and please people.” The same holds true when it comes to helping customers place orders.   Responding to its visitors’ demand for more convenience and flexibility when placing to-go orders, the chain now features a platform that allows customers to order meals through their smartphones, tablets, laptops and desktop computers.   
  • Nordstrom expanding important employee benefit

    New parents working at Nordstrom are about to get a break.   Starting May 1, the department store retailer will offer up to 12 weeks of fully paid leave to birth mothers, and up to six weeks of fully paid leave to other new parents, the Seattle Times reported.    Nordstrom’s current maternity leave policy is six weeks of disability paid at 60% for birth mothers.
