  • Reduced Costs With Site-Recovered Energy

    Retailers and other building owners are caught between two powerful and conflicting forces: the need to lower energy and equipment costs, and the need to meet or exceed outdoor air ventilation regulations for the health and comfort of customers and employees alike. Indeed, studies have proven that outdoor air ventilation creates a healthier work environment. However, as outdoor air rates increase, so does the size, cost and operating expense of HVAC systems.

  • Kohl's keeps shining with enhanced solar energy policy

    MENOMONEE FALLS, Wis. — Kohl’s Department Stores is strengthening its commitment to renewable energy, by increasing its solar program by nearly 25% in 2012, installing solar panels at approximately 30 additional Kohl’s locations.

On the green front, the chain has become a leader in best practices, with innovations that deliver positive results for consumers, communities and the company’s bottom line.

  • USM headquarters received LEED Silver

    Norristown, Pa. -- As part of its continuing commitment to sustainability, USM Inc. has recently received LEED Silver CI (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Commercial Interiors) certification for its headquarters facility in Norristown, Pa. The facility opened in October 2011.
     
    A national provider of interior and exterior facilities maintenance programs, USM is a subsidiary of EMCOR Group, a leader  in mechanical and electrical construction, energy infrastructure, and facilities services for a diverse range of businesses.

  • A&P to be exclusive retailer of BrightFarms' Brooklyn-grown produce

    NEW YORK and MONTVALE, N.J. — Grocer A&P has inked an exclusive partnership with BrightFarms, becoming the only retailer of BrightFarms’ Brooklyn-grown produce from the world’s largest rooftop farm.

  • Starbucks to expand presence in Latin America; ‘several hundred’ stores planned for Brazil

    Seattle -- Starbucks Coffee Co. details its expansion plans for Latin America, including the opening of its first shop in Costa Rica on June 20. The company also said it plans to open "several hundred stores” in Brazil the next five years. (Starbucks has full ownership of its business in Brazil.)

    Starbucks and joint-venture partner Alsea expect to add more than 300 new stores in Argentina and Mexico by 2015.

  • Saks Off 5th to open in Carousel Center, Syracuse, N.Y.

    New York -- Saks Fifth Avenue’s Off 5th plans to open its doors in Syracuse’s Carousel Center on June 21.

    The 24,962-sq.-ft. store will be located in the center’s new expansion area called Destiny USA, which is the largest LEED certified commercial retail project in the country.

  • Meijer joins EPA GreenChill Partnership

    GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Meijer recently joined the U.S. Environment Protection Agency's GreenChill Partnership. Created as a voluntary partnership, GreenChill members focus on reducing refrigerant emissions and decreasing their impact on the environment and ultimately people's health. By joining GreenChill, Meijer is pledging to meet higher standards that go beyond the regulatory requirements to protect the ozone layer and combat climate change.
