  • Office Depot buying Svanstroms Gruppen

    Boca Raton, Fla. -- Office Depot is buying Swedish office supply company Svanstroms Gruppen in order to expand its presence there.

    Terms were not disclosed.

    Office Depot first entered the Swedish market in 2004 through a strategic alliance with AGE Kontor & Data AB.

    "We've been successful in this market and see continued growth and high potential in the region," said Charlie Brown, president of Office Depot's international division, said in a statement on Tuesday.

  • No more breakfast at Tiffany's for Quinn

    NEW YORK -Tiffany & Co. announced that James Quinn will retire in early 2012. Quinn joined Tiffany in 1986 and has served as president since 2003, responsible for the company’s sales outside the Americas.

  • Fresh & Easy to enter Northern California market in March

    El Segundo, Calif. -- Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market on Wednesday said it will open its first stores in Northern California in March and April, with the first two scheduled to open March 2 in San Jose and Danville. Nine additional locations are scheduled to open in the area within the two-month time frame.

    Fresh & Easy also said it also plans to open two stores in San Francisco early this year.

  • Newell Rubbermaid CEO to retire

    ATLANTA — Newell Rubbermaid, whose portfolio includes the hair accessories brand Goody, has announced that its president and CEO, Mark Ketchum, will retire later this year.

    An executive recruiting firm has been retained to conduct an outside search for Ketchum's replacement and also assist with the assessment of internal candidates, the company stated. To help ensure a smooth and transition, Ketchum plans to remain on the company¹s board through the spring of 2012.

  • 100th annual NRF Convention Opens in New York City

    The National Retail Federation’s Annual Convention & Expo kicked off  at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on Sunday, Jan. 9, with a lineup of power speakers and plenty of buzz. It is the 100th anniversary of  annual event, which attracts retailers from around the world.

    This year, the four-day NRF show featured more than 600 exhibiting companies, new retail technology pavilions, and presentations from a stellar line-up of top-tier retailers. Total attendance was estimated at more than 18,500, with representatives from 70 countries.

  • Correction: sales did not exceed expectations

    It seemed like everything was going Target’s way after the company reported a 5.5% same-store sales increase during November, but then the revelation came last week of a 0.9% December comp increase and the wind came out of the company’s sales.

  • Quicksilver selects SAP solution

    New York City -- Quiksilver is targeting its next phase of corporate development using industry-specific software from SAP AG. By replacing its existing business software systems, the sports-themed lifestyle retailer aims to better support the global development, production and distribution of its diversified mix of branded apparel, footwear and accessories.

  • Brown Shoe promotes Sullivan to CEO

    St. Louis -- Brown Shoe Co. announced Monday it has promoted Diane Sullivan as president and CEO, effective May 26.

    Sullivan ha been president and COO.

    Current CEO Ron Fromm will remain chairman following a transition period ending in May.
