  • Parmida Home opens new store

    Dayton, Ohio -- Parmida Home said Tuesday it will open its fifth retail store in the Greene shopping center, located in Dayton, Ohio, on April 1.

    “We are very excited to grow in the Dayton area,” said Parmida marketing director Siotha Vest.

  • Report: A&P to close 32 stores

    New York City -- A&P plans to close 32 stores in six states, including four in the New York City area, Crain’s New York reported.

    Among the stores slated to close are 14 Pathmarks, seven Super Fresh shops, four A&Ps and three Waldbaums, according to the report.

    A&P operates 395 stores in eight states and the District of Columbia under the banners A&P, Waldbaum's, Pathmark, Best Cellars, The Food Emporium, Super Fresh and Food Basics. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December.

  • Retail sales increase for seventh straight month

    WASHINGTON — The U.S. Census Bureau on Tuesday reported that retail sales continue on a positive trend, edging up 0.3% for the month of January.

    The increase to $381.6 billion marked the seventh consecutive month of gains for retail sales. Total sales for the month were above the year-ago period by 7.8%.

  • Jo-Ann Stores to move forward with sale to Leonard Green

    New York City -- Jo-Ann Stores announced Tuesday that it has received no other takeover bids after a nearly two-month "go-shop" period. The fabric and crafts chain said it will therefore ask shareholders to vote on the company's proposed $1.6 billion sale to Leonard Green & Partners LP.

    The meeting is scheduled for March 18.

    Jo-Ann Stores, which operates 751 stores in 48 states, announced the proposed sale in December. The company had until Feb. 14 to seek a better offer.

  • ACSI shows customer satisfaction remains strong

    ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The American Customer Satisfaction Index has dropped just 0.1% from the previous quarter to 75.9 on the ACSI's 100-point scale, indicating that customers satisfaction remains strong, the ACSI reported.

  • Target to open in landmark Chicago building, to call small-format locations CityTarget

    Minneapolis -- Target Corp. said Tuesday it will open a small-format store in an historic Chicago building constructed in 1899 to house a department store. The national landmark, designed by famed architect Louis Sullivan, was home to the Carson Pirie Scott department store from 1904 to 2007. The retailer also announced that its small-format locations across the United States will be named CityTarget, including the store in Chicago.

  • AC Moore considering potential sale

    Berlin, N.J. -- A.C. Moore Arts & Crafts said Tuesday it is considering a potential sale of the company.

    The arts-and-crafts retailer revealed that its board is looking at strategic options to boost shareholder value, which may also include corporate financing or raising capital. It said there has been third-party "expressions of interest," but that it won't discuss any developments unless its board approves a specific transaction.

  • Walgreens promotes Mia Scholz

    CHICAGO — Walgreens last month promoted Mia Scholz from corporate VP accounting and controller to SVP accounting and controller. She joined Walgreens in 1999 as director of internal audit. She was named a divisional VP in 2003, and promoted to corporate VP accounting and controller in 2007.

    Before joining Walgreens, Scholz was a senior manager for Arthur Andersen LLP in Chicago.

    She received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 1988.
