  • NRF: January retail sales up 0.3%

    Washington -- Retail sales ticked up in January as consumers adjusted their spending in response to the increase in payroll taxes and rise in gasoline and energy prices. According to the National Retail Federation, January retail sales (excluding automobiles, gas stations and restaurants) increased 0.3% seasonally adjusted from December and increased 5.4% unadjusted year-over-year.

  • Study: Collaboration between CIO and other c-suite execs crucial to success

    New York — Findings released Tuesday by PricewaterhouseCoopers showed that top-performing companies typically have demonstrated strong collaboration between the corner office and the CIO.

    According to PwC’s Digital IQ survey, companies with strong, collaborative relationships between the CIO and other c-suite executives are four times as likely to be top-performing companies as those with fragmented relationships.

  • Corner Bakery Café to open 16 locations in greater New York area

    Dallas -- Corner Bakery Cafe announced plans to open 16 restaurants in six counties in the greater New York City area as part of a recent multi-unit agreement with CBCWSNY. The group of restaurant operators plans to open its first restaurant in 2013 and the remaining sites over the next six years.

    Corner Bakery Cafe opened 20 new cafes and signed another 125 cafes in 2012, raising the total to 147 open cafes and 288 cafes under development, as the company moves forward on its goal to double its U.S. footprint by the end of 2015.

     

  • Harris Teeter possibly on sales block

    MATTHEWS, N.C. — Carolina retailer Harris Teeter may be exploring a sale, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday evening. 

    According to the report, Harris Teeter is being advised by JP Morgan. WSJ tabulated Harris Teeter's market value at $1.8 billion for its 200 supermarkets. 

  • Gander Mountain opens firearms superstore in Ohio

    New York -- Gander Mountain is giving more space to guns and related accessories at store at its store in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. The outdoors retailer has renovated the location into the Gander Mtn. Firearms Super Center.

    The redesigned Reynoldsburg store offers thousands of new and used firearms, along with broad selection of firearms accessories, specialty apparel and ammunition. It has firearms specialists on duty to give shoppers personalized service.

  • Meijer invests big in new stores, remodels

    GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Meijer is investing more than $160 million in new store construction and remodeling.

    The investment includes the construction of six new Meijer supercenters and major remodel projects for an additional five stores. Michigan, Indiana and Illinois will each welcome two new Meijer supercenters, with remodel projects planned at an additional four Michigan stores and one Meijer location in Illinois.

  • BDO Survey: Retail CFOs project 3.2% increase in sales in 2013

    Chicago -- Extended store hours Thanksgiving weekend promotions were the least successful holiday marketing tactics, according to a survey of retail CFOs by BDO USA. The also report found that, following uneven sales results in December and January, the executives are moderating their expectations for 2013, projecting a 3.2% increase in total store sales, down from last year’s expected 4.5% increase.

  • Former Office Depot merch chief to head ops at retail consultancy

    CHICAGO — Hilco Trading has named Farla Efros as EVP and COO of its SD Retail Consulting unit. The move is part of the company's strategic efforts to expand the breadth and depth of its senior management team. In her new role, Efros will be responsible for the firm’s merchandising and strategy practice area.
