  • Cabela’s profit surges 73% on guns and ammo sales

    Sidney, Neb. -- Cabela’s first quarter profit rose 72.9%, topping expectations, on strong sales of firearms and ammunition. Net income rose to $49.8 million, up from $28.8 million in the year-ago quarter.
     
    Revenue increased 28.7% to $802.5 million from $623.5 million last year. Analysts expected revenue of $770.5 million.
       

  • New acquisitions propel Stanley Q1 results

    New Britain, Conn.-based Stanley Black & Decker saw revenues grow, largely as the result of acquisitions.

     

    The company reported first-quarter revenues of $2.49 billion, an increase of 3% over the prior-year period. Volume and currency each declined approximately 1%, while acquisitions added 4% to that total. 

     

    Net earnings declined to $81.1 million for the quarter, compared with $121.8 million in the same quarter last year. 

     

  • Cabela’s announces plans for two new locations

    Sidney, Neb. -- Cabela’s Inc. announced plans to open two new locations, with one in Tualatin, Ore., and the other in the north Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, area.
     
    Construction is scheduled to begin this summer on the Canadian outpost, with a spring 2014 opening planned. The 50,000-sq.-ft. store will be located in the Manning Town Centre in north Edmonto.
     

  • CSA hires tech expert

    New York -- Chain Store Age is pleased to announce that Dan Berthiaume has joined the staff as senior editor, technology.  

    Berthiaume, who started covering retail technology in 1998, brings a wealth of experience to his new position. He served as corporate content manager of Retail Systems AlertGroup from 1998 to 2006, writing and editing the company's retail tech publications and overseeing its website, and then moved on to a successful freelance career, reporting on technology for a variety of print and online publications.

  • Safeway sales suffer, shares drop

    PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway shares dropped dramatically as the company reported $10 billion in sales for its first quarter 2013 ended March 23, which is essentially flat as compared to the first quarter of 2012. An identical-store sales increase of 1.5% (excluding fuel) was offset primarily by the disposition of Genuardi's stores in 2012 and lower fuel sales in 2013.

     

  • Jones Lang LaSalle expands retail expertise in Midwest

    Indianapolis -- Jones Lang LaSalle said that Rebecca Wells has been named EVP in the company’s Indianapolis office, part of its Capital Markets arm.

    In her new role, Wells will work closely with Midwest Capital Markets leader and International Director John Huguenard to expand the firm’s platform of services, focusing on retail and office dispositions in the Midwest.

    Wells joins Jones Lang LaSalle from national commercial real estate firm Cassidy Turley, where she served as SVP Institutional Sales Group.

     

  • Survey: Retail bottom lines benefit from cloud computing

    SAN ANTONIO, Texas — A survey by open-cloud company Rackspace Hosting of 1,300 U.S. and U.K. companies revealed that retail in both countries has benefited from cloud computing via IT cost reductions, increased profits, improved disaster recovery and business agility, as well as strengthened out-of-office employee performance.

     

  • SoulCycle to open at Rye Ridge Shopping Center

    Rye Ridge, N.Y. -- The Charter Realty Group said that it has arranged its second transaction on behalf of SoulCycle for a 2,350-sq.-ft. space at Rye Ridge Shopping Center, located in Rye Brook, N.Y.  

    Charter previously represented SoulCycle, an indoor fitness cycling center, in a 7,000-sq.-ft at One Fawcett Place in Greenwich, Conn.
