  • Dollar Tree third-quarter results bolstered by increased traffic

    Increased customer traffic helped drive Dollar Tree’s third-quarter results. The retailer cited growth in consumer basics as well as seasonal and variety merchandise, and said its higher margin variety categories are growing at a faster pace.

    The company reported consolidated net sales for the quarter of $1.9 billion, a 9.5% increase from $1.72 billion for the year-ago quarter. Comparable store sales increased 3.1%.

  • Abercrombie & Fitch swings to Q3 loss on charges, weak sales

    New Albany, Ohio -- Abercrombie & Fitch Co. swung to a loss in its third quarter, dragged down in part by charges related to the shuttering of its 28 freestanding Gilly Hicks stores. But its adjusted profit topped analysts' estimates, even as its sales softened.

  • H.J. Martin and Son helps Penney complete in-store shops project

    Green Bay, Wis. -- H.J. Martin and Son helped J.C. Penney add two new in-store shops: Disney and GiggleBaby.

    Fifty crews of two people – 100 total – from H.J. Martin were dedicated to the project, which spanned two-and-a-half weeks from mid-September until early October. In all, H.J. Martin performed the work in 218 Penney stores across the United States, with the exception of the south and southeast.

  • PetSmart adds director of Herman Miller Foundation to board

    PetSmart has unanimously elected Elizabeth Nickels to fill a newly created vacancy on its board of directors. Nickels will join the 2013 class of directors, and will be eligible for re-election by the company’s stockholders at the 2014 annual meeting of stockholders.

  • Men’s Wearhouse investor still pushing for deal with Jos. A. Bank

    New York -- Eminence Capital which owns 9.8% of the common stock of The Men's Wearhouse and is its single largest shareholder, on Wednesday released a presentation describing why Men’s Wearhouse board of directors should engage in merger discussions with Jos. A. Bank Clothiers, Inc. Eminence Capital also said that it has retained Moelis & Company as a strategic advisor.

  • 99¢ Only Stores open in Menifee, Calif.

    City of Commerce, Calif. — 99¢ Only Stores will celebrate the grand opening of its new store in Menifee, Calif., by selling Westinghouse 40-inch flat-screen TVs for just 99 cents to the first nine customers in line.

    The 18,000-sq.-ft. store will feature a perishable food department with produce, dairy and frozen foods. 99¢ Only Stores currently operates 335 stores in California, Texas, Arizona and Nevada.
