  • Kohl’s earnings, revenue miss expectations in Q1

    Menomonee Falls, Wis. -- Kohl’s Corp. missed Wall Street expectations for profits, revenue and same-store sales during a difficult first quarter. Net income, which had been expected to rise slightly, fell 15% to $125 million, from $147 million.

    In addition, net sales declined 3% to $4.07 billion from $4.2 billion, while analysts had expected them to rise to $4.22 billion. Same-store sales, also expected to increase, fell 3.4%.

  • PetSmart opens pop-up dog park in Detroit

    Phoenix -- PetSmart has partnered with the City of Detroit and the non-profit community organization Detroit Dog Park to open a portable, pop-up dog park to a vacant lot in Detroit.

  • Resurgent JCP reports surprisingly strong sales

    Things took a wacky turn in the retail world this week as JCPenney reported a 6.2% same store sales increase and a huge gross margin expansion while Macy’s, Kohl’s and Walmart stumbled.

  • Gold prices hurt DGSE in Q1

    Dallas – DGSE Companies Inc. swung to a net loss of $523,000 from a net profit of $300,000 in first quarter 2014. The retailer cited significant decreases in both bullion and scrap sales resulting from a drop in gold prices as affecting its performance, which included a 32% drop in revenue to $19.9 million from $29.2 million.

    DSGE has closed 23 stores since February 2014 and expects $3.7 million in non-recurring charges in 2014 as part of discontinued operations.

  • Retailers launch Cyber Intelligence Sharing Center

    Arlington, Va. - The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA), along with several retail brands, has launched the Retail Cyber Intelligence Sharing Center (R-CISC), the centerpiece of which is a Retail Information Sharing and Analysis Center (Retail-ISAC).

  • Chute Gerdeman promotes four as it names new creative director

    Columbus, Ohio -- Chute Gerdeman has announced four team member promotions, including the appointment of Mary Lynn Waite, formerly senior designer, brand communications, to creative director.

    In other promotions:

    • Steve Boreman, previously senior designer, brand communications, has been named design director, brand communications.  

    • Kevin Worden has been promoted to director of digital integration, information technology.  

  • J.C. Penney tops views in first quarter; same-store sales up 6.2%

    Dallas -- J.C. Penney topped expectations for the first quarter, reporting a 6.2% increase in same-store sales that easily topped views. Revenue for the quarter, which ended May 3, rose to $2.80 billion, above the $2.71 billion analysts expected, up from $2.64 billion in the year-ago period.  

    It was the second consecutive month of same-store sales gains for Penney, and the retailer said sales improved sequentially each month within the quarter.

    Penney lost $352 million for the quarter, not as much as analysts expected.

  • eBay in Español and Portugues

    Shoppers in Central and South America can now shop eBay in Spanish and Portuguese using their local currencies.

    The global commerce platform and a mobile commerce leader launched Spanish- and Portuguese-language sites to better serve customers across Latin America.

    More than 2 million people in Latin America already shop eBay in English and U.S. dollars. Now, when these customers visit eBay, they will see localized shopping experiences in Spanish or Portuguese — online and on eBay mobile.
