  • Fewer retailers among Fortune’s ‘Best Companies’ list

    The retail industry continued to backslide on Fortune’s list of the 100 Best Companies to Work For, but the slight may not be as bad as it seems.

    The 2015 version of the list included 10 retailers compared to 12 retailers on the 2014 version and 14 retailers on the 2013 version. Notable inclusions on the 2015 list were Wegman’s (7), Container Store (27), QuikTrip (54),Whole Foods Market (55), Recreational Equipment (58), Build-A-Bear (59), CarMax (64), Publix (81), Zappos (86) and Nordstrom (93).

  • SpartanNash promotes CFO to COO

    New York -- Grocery distributor and retailer SpartanNash has promoted Dave Staples, current executive VP and CFO, to COO. Staples will oversee all three operating segments of the company: retail, wholesale and military distribution. He will continue to serve as CFO until his replacement is hired.

    Staples joined SpartanNash in January 2000, serving as the company’s executive VP and CFO since November of 2000

  • Port dispute, weather slam Conn's deliveries

    The labor dispute at the West Coast ports and harsh winter weather are among the reasons Conn's reported a drop in same store sales for February.

    Conn's said same store sales dropped 5.8% in February, compared to a 14.9% increase in the prior-year period.

  • Roundy’s net income doubles in Q4; will open five stores

    Milwaukee – Roundy’s Inc. reported net income of $7.5 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2014, more than double $3.5 million in the same quarter the prior fiscal year. A shift from net after-tax loss to net after-tax income from 27 Rainbow stores that were closed or sold drove net income growth.

    Roundy’s plans to open five new stores in fiscal 2015, including one in the first quarter.

  • Tax benefit boosts Q2 profit at Costco

    Issaquah, Wash. – A tax benefit in connection with a special cash dividend helped boost net income at Costco Wholesale Corp. a better-than-expected 29% to $598 million from $463 million in the company’s second quarter of fiscal 2013.

    Sales increased 4% to $26.9 billion and membership sales grew 5.8% to $582 million, with total revenues increasing 15.8% to $27.5 billion during the quarter ending Feb. 15.

  • Petland hires ex-Walmart exec as it aims to expand

    Petland has hired a former Walmart executive as vice president of corporate stores as the pet supply retailer looks to expand its national footprint. 

    Although Tony Samples last worked at Walmart in 2006, Petland touted his Walmart experience in a news release. "Tony brings extensive retail experience to Petland at a time when Petland is expanding its retail footprint," said Petland President and CEO Joe Watson. Samples will lead Petland's retail store division and oversee the company's merchandising and marketing efforts.

  • Cabela’s to open new store in Ohio, in spring 2016

    Sidney, Neb. -- Cabela’s Incorporated  announced plans to open a store in Centerville, Ohio, in the greater Dayton area.

    Construction on the 70,000-sq.-ft. store is scheduled to begin in 2015, with a spring 2016 opening. It will be located in the Cornerstone at Centerville development. Oberer Development Company is the developer.

  • Shops at Highland Village to get multi-million dollar makeover

    Dallas -- Trademark Property Co., the operating partner for The Shops at Highland Village, has announced a multi-million dollar renovation of the 352,000-sq.-ft. shopping center that includes enhanced common area improvements, upgraded landscaping, new amenities for adults and children, updated facades, and new signage throughout the property.
