    Matthews, N.C. – Billionaire activist investor Carl Icahn, who recently engaged in a high-profile effort to force EBay to separate its PayPal business, is now demanding that Family Dollar sell itself. Icahn, who recently disclosed he has a 9.4% stake in the discount retailer, sent an open letter to Family Dollar chairman Howard Levine saying that it is imperative the company be put up for sale immediately.

    Just two weeks after Family Dollar adopted a “poison pill” shareholder’s rights plan, billionaire investor Carl Icahn, who recently disclosed he has a 9.4% stake in the discount retailer, has fired back.

    In an open letter to Family Dollar chairman Howard Levine, Icahn demanded that the company be put up for sale immediately. Icahn also said in the letter that he wants three of his representatives added to the Family Dollar board immediately and will take his proposal for a sale directly to shareholders if management doesn’t support it.

  • Walmart Canada names Delhaize Group exec as president, CEO

    Mississauga, Ontario -- Walmart Canada has appointed an executive from Delhaize Group, Dirk Van den Berghe, as president and CEO, effective Aug. 1.

    Van den Berghe, who has 30 years of international business experience, most recently served as CEO of Delhaize’s Belgium and Luxembourg operations. His appointment at Walmart was seen as a way for the discounter to strengthen its grocery business in Canada.

    The company behind leading sporting goods brands Bauer and Easton went public on January 19, offering sports enthusiasts and investors an opportunity to get in the game.

    Performance Sports Group, trading under the symbol PSG on the New York and Toronto stock exchanges, offered roughly seven million shares priced at $15.50 which generated gross proceeds of $110 million. In conjunction with the offer, the company changed its name to Performance Sports Group from Bauer Performance Sports.

  • Google buys video ad company

    New York -- Google announced that it has acquired video advertising provider mDialog.

    In a post on Google+, the web giant said it will work with the mDialog team to incorporate their technology and expertise into its DoubleClick online advertising platform product suite.
     

  • American Standard CEO joins parent company board

    American Standard Brands president and CEO Jay Gould was appointed to the board of directors of American Standard’s parent company, LIXIL Corporation.

    Gould joined American Standard Brands in January 2012.

    According to the company, Gould executed a plan that quadrupled the company's EBITA, grew sales by 10% and improved gross margins by 700 basis points.
