  • Hot Topic Q1 beats expectations

    City of Industry, Calif. -- Hot Topic reported net income in the first fiscal quarter of $3.8 million, compared with a net loss of $7.7 million for the year-ago period. The results include $12.4 million of expenses for the implementation of the strategic business changes and cost reduction plan.

    Total sales for the first quarter ended April 28, 2012, increased 6.4% to $171.5 million compared to $161.3 million for the first quarter last year. Same-store sales rose 7.5%.

    When Children’s Wish Foundation International, an Atlanta-based charity, hosts scrapbooking or craft parties for children in the hospital, it turns to a gifts-in-kind organization and its catalog of donated merchandise for supplies. The two organizations then coordinate shipments of stuffed animals, Halloween costumes, craft materials, toys, videos and other items to hospitals to help fulfill the wishes of children in need.

  • Hawaiin boutique owner wins top prize in NRF's 'This is Retail' contest

    WASHINGTON — Tanna Dang, a boutique owner in Honolulu, Hawaii was awarded the top $25,000 prize in the National Retail Federation’s inaugural “This is Retail” video contest. Florida’s Kim Williams of The Polka Dot press came in second place and will take home $15,000 and Illinois’ Susan Kaufman will take home $10,000 for third place. Nearly 1 million votes were cast by the public through NRF’s Retail Means Jobs website to choose the contest winners.

  • Dylan’s Candy Bar to open in Los Angeles

    New York -- Dylan's Candy Bar will open its first West Coast location in Los Angeles, this summer. The 2,500-sq.-ft. store will be located in a historic landmark: the Original Farmers Market on the corner of Third and Fairfax.

    MINNEAPOLIS — First quarter earnings at Target exceeded a profit forecast the company increased last month after a strong start to the quarter.

  • Saks profit climbs in Q1, revenues miss

    New York -- Saks Inc. reported Tuesday that net income for the quarter ended April 28 rose 13.2% to $32.1 million, from $28.4 million last year.

    Revenue for the period climbed 3.8% to $753.6 million, missing Wall Street’s expected $762.6 million. Same-store sales rose 4.8%.
