  • Wet Seal to pay $7.5 million in discrimination lawsuit

    Philadelphia -- Wet Seal Inc. agreed to pay $7.5 million to settle a federal racial discrimination lawsuit that accused retailer of firing black employees because they didn’t fit the retailer’s “brand image.”
       
    The NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund represented the plaintiffs in the class-action effort. The lawsuit alleged that former top Wet Seal executives denied equal pay and promotion opportunities to black store managers or removed them outright, replacing them with white employees.

  • Bebe names former Limited exec SVP, marketing

    LOS ANGELES — Bebe has appointed former Limited executive Keith Keegan as SVP of marketing. In his new role, Keegan will lead all aspects of marketing and branding across all channels of the business. He will report to CEO Steve Birkhold.

  • TJX joins exodus of retailers no longer reporting monthly sales

    New York -- TJX Cos. has joined the growing ranks of retailers who no longer report monthly same-store sales. On Thursday, the retailer announced that it will report results on a quarterly basis going forward. Also, as previously announced, Ross Stores will no longer be reporting same-store sales after the April results.

    That will leave 11 U.S. retail chains reporting monthly sales, down from a peak of 68 in 2006, according to Reuters.

     

  • Target sets bull’s-eye on fall with new collection

    MINNEAPOLIS — Summer’s not yet here, but Target has its bull’s-eye set on fall. The discount retailer is teaming up with designer Phillip Lim on an exclusive collection for women and men. 

    Called 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target, the collection will be available Sept. 15 at most Target stores and online.

  • Hershey sweet on global growth

    BALTIMORE — Hershey is ready to extend its global footprint, and as part of its initiative to drive that growth, the company hosted its first Global Partner Summit, an open innovation forum. 

    The goal of the summit, which was held in Baltimore, was to unleash the combined resources of Hershey’s internal innovation resources and its broad supply base to create new ideas, new capabilities, more sustainable practices and consumer-focused innovations that will drive industry-leading growth.

  • The Hillshire Brands names new CIO

    CHICAGO — The Hillshire Brands Company has appointed David W. Stahl as its new CIO. Stahl will oversee all IT strategy and planning activities and will provide executive leadership and direction for IT. He will report to Maria Henry, CFO.

  • Doggie smiles contest promotes pet oral hygiene

    OMAHA, Neb. — Sergeant's Pet Care Products, an Omaha, Neb.-based manufacturer of pet products, engaged shoppers while promoting good oral hygiene for pets with its national Sentry Petrodex Superstar Smiles photo contest, sponsored by the company’s Sentry Petrodex dental brand.

    Three-year-old yellow Labrador Retriever Flash took the top prize.
