  • Express to close 50 stores following weak first quarter

    Express plans to close approximately 50 stores during the next 36 months, primarily at the end of their leases, following a weaker-than-expected first quarter.

    The company’s profit dropped to $5.08 million, from $32.4 million a year earlier. Sales decreased to $460.7 million, from $509.4 million, while Same-store sales fell 11%.

  • Express to enter South Africa

    Columbus, Ohio – A subsidiary of Express Inc. has entered into a franchise agreement with Edcon Group, a retail franchise operator in South Africa, to bring the Express brand to South Africa. The Express brand is expected to launch as a store-in-store concept at select Edgars department stores by the end of 2014 with standalone Express store locations to open in 2015.

    Express has identified international expansion as one of the company's four pillars of growth and a significant long-term revenue opportunity for the company.

  • Max Challenge taps R.J. Brunelli

    Old Bridge, N.J. — Max Challenge Franchising, a fitness center franchisor, has appointed R.J. Brunelli & Co. as its exclusive national tenant representative.

    Max Challenge studios currently operate throughout much of New Jersey, Staten Island, New York, and metropolitan Sacramento, California.

    The company is seeking 2,000 to 3,000-sq.-ft. locations in the Hoboken/Edgewater, Montclair, Bergen County and Cherry Hill markets in New Jersey.

  • Dollar General CEO: Keeping it simple is key to success

    Goodlettsville, Tenn. -- Keep it simple — that’s secret to Dollar General's success Rick Dreiling, chairman and CEO of the 75-year-old company said at its shareholders annual meeting.

    "Simple neighborhood stores, simple, frequently-needed items and everyday low prices," he said.   • Consumer spending dips 0.1% in April

    Washington, D.C. – U.S. consumer spending fell by $8.1 billion, or 0.1%, in April 2014. It was the first monthly decline in consumer spending since April 2013 and followed a 1% increase of $117.6 billion the previous month.

  • SRS wins U.S. MAXI Award at ICSC

    DallasSRS Real Estate Partners earned a silver U.S. MAXI Award at the Encore Hotel in Las Vegas during the ICSC RECon Convention. The awards are open to shopping centers, shopping center companies, specialty retailers, specialty leasing managers, marketing directors and general managers.

    SRS received a silver Award in the B2B division of the Traditional Marketing category for its effective brand enhancement campaign.

     

  • Broader expands her role at Walmart International

    Walmart Canada president and CEO Shelley Broader’s responsibilities have been significantly expanded to include oversight of Europe and Africa.

    Broader was named EVP, president and CEO of Walmart EMEA, a region Walmart defines as including Canada, Europe, the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa.
