  • Green Mountain appoints former P&G, Coke exec as new CEO

    WATERBURY, Vt. — Green Mountain Coffee Roasters has named former P&G and Coca-Cola executive Brian Kelley as its new president and CEO, effective Dec. 3.

  • Best Buy swings to loss in Q3

    Minneapolis -- Best Buy Co. woes continue, as the electronics retailer reported Tuesday a loss of $10 million for the quarter ended Nov. 3, compared with net income of $156 million in the year-ago period. Results were hurt by restructuring charges and slowed sales.

    Sales slid 4% to $10.75 billion, but met Wall Street expectations. Same-store sales dropped 4.3%.

  • Kirkland’s reports Q3 loss; CEO to go on temporary medical leave

    Nashville, Tenn. -- Kirkland's Inc. lost $416,000 for the period ended Oct. 27, compared with a profit of $1.2 million a year earlier. Analysts had predicted a bigger loss.

    Revenue inched down to $96.7 million from $97.1 million. Same-store sales were down 4.7%.

    Kirkland's also announced that president and CEO Robert Alderson is taking a temporary medical leave of absence, starting on Monday. SVP and CFO Mike Madden will serve as acting president and CEO until Alderson returns.

  • Report: NRLB promises quick action on Walmart case

    New York -- Federal labor officials said Monday they will decide quickly whether to support a request by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to stop a union-backed group from pushing worker walk-outs at hundreds of stores on Black Friday, the Associated Press reported.

    The chain on Thursday filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board to stop OUR Walmart, a group made up of current and former Wal-Mart workers, from holding protests at hundreds of stores.

     

  • Work more, save more – Walmart extends worker discounts

    Walmart has taken heat for violating some unwritten retail rule about not opening on Thanksgiving, but on Thursday it extended a benefit that many employees will find appealing.

    Walmart has long offered employees a 10% discount on general merchandise, which is pretty hefty considering prices are already low. That discount is in place all year and then in December employees could also save 10% on food.

  • Ahold names COO of Ahold USA

    Amsterdam, the Netherlands -- Royal Ahold announced Thursday it has named James McCann as COO of Ahold USA, effective Jan. 1.

    McCann, who is the company’s current chief commercial and development officer, replaces Carl Schlicker, who is retiring.

     

  • Portland expands plastic bag ban

    Portland, Ore. -- The city council of Portland, Ore., voted to expand the city's one-year old plastic bag ban, voting 5-0 to phase out plastic checkout bags at an estimated 5,000 restaurants and retailers.

    The ban will impact retailers larger than 10,000 -sq.-ft. on March 1, 2013, and the remaining retailers on October 1, 2013. Portland's 2011 rule affected fewer than 200 businesses.

    Retailers will still be able to provide plastic bags for bulk items, produce, meats, dry cleaning and prescription drugs.

  • Duke gives Obama and Congress fiscal cliff deadline

    For a split second after the presidential election the victor and the vanquished struck a conciliatory tone on finding the balance between raising taxes and cutting spending. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. president and CEO Mike Duke wants the issue resolved as soon as possible.

    Duke was among a group of business leaders in Washington earlier this week meeting with President Barack Obama and following the meeting Walmart released a statement expressing his views on the issue.
