  • McCain Foods names new president

    TORONTO — McCain Foods announced that it has named Dirk Van de Put as president and CEO and a director of the company, succeeding Dale Morrison, effective July 1.

    Dirk  joined McCain Foods from Novartis where he was President of the $3-billion global Over-the-Counter Consumer Health business. Prior to joining Novartis, Dirk held executive positions with Group Danone and Mars Inc. 

     

  • At Home Depot meeting, a variety of voices

    ATLANTA — Customer service, glue traps and corporate democracy were among the issues on the table at a wide-ranging Home Depot annual shareholders meeting in Atlanta Thursday.

     Home Depot’s shareholders approved the company's recommendations for its board of directors and executive pay structure. And it defeated a shareholder proposal regarding shareholder control of corporate political gifts.

  • Jobs report delivers blow to retail stocks

    New York City -- A jobs report on Friday that showed a slowing hiring market sent retail shares tumbling. According to the Labor Department, U.S. employers added just 54,000 new workers in May, the fewest in eight months. With unemployment at 9.1%, those retailers most closely tied to the job market, including Staples and Office Depot, saw the most negative impact.

  • Japan’s head merchant wins top Walmart award

    Given all the talk of EDLP at Walmart’s annual shareholders’ meeting, it was understandable the company chose Maki Nakamura, chief merchandising officer at Walmart Japan, as the recipient of the Sam M. Walton Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

    Walmart’s Seiyu stores in Japan have been implementing every day low prices for several years, and the company’s patience has finally paid off with improved business results in what has been a challenging market.

  • Staples Europe announces exec changes

    Framingham, Mass. -- Staples Europe announced Thursday that it has appointed Amee Chande to managing director UK retail & direct and Andrew Gabriel to director of technology and services European retail.

    Chande will have overall responsibility for Staples retail and delivery businesses in the United Kingdom, a key market for the company. Chande joined Staples in 2009 as senior VP strategy, responsible for developing and driving the company’s growth agenda.

  • Target May comps miss forecast

    MINNEAPOLIS — Target reported a 2.8% same-store sales increase for May, falling short of Wall Street's expectation for a 3.5% increase, as consumers remained cautious. The retailer reported that net sales for the four-week period were $4.8 billion, an increase of 3.8%t from $4.6 billion for the four weeks ended May 29, 2010. 

  • Commercial Retail Advisors names new associate

    Tucson, Ariz. -- Commercial Retail Advisors said it has hired Derek Gersdorf as a Retail Specialist.

    Gersdorf's duties will include retail leasing and retail tenant representation. Prior to joining Commercial Retail Advisors, he worked as a residential appraiser in the Phoenix and Tucson regions for Casa Grande Appraisal Service and Forsythe Appraisals.
     

  • A|X Armani Exchange implements Assess Systems pre-employment solution

    Dallas -- Human resources solution firm Assess Systems said Thursday that A|X Armani Exchange has chosen Assess to provide pre-employment testing of all stock and sales associates for both the retailer’s Canadian and U.S. operations.
