  • Two new members join RILA board

    SARASOTA, Fla. -- The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) announced that Bill Simon, president and CEO of Walmart stores, and Steven Preston, president and CEO of OakLeaf Waste Management were named to the RILA board of directors, following the board’s semi-annual board of directors meeting held Sunday in Sarasota, Fla.

    Simon replaces Walmart vice chairman and president and CEO of global e-commerce and global sourcing Eduardo Castro-Wright.

    Sarasota, Fla. -- The Retail Industry Leaders Association said Tuesday that Bill Simon, president and CEO of Walmart Stores, along with Steven Preston, president and CEO of OakLeaf Waste management, have joined the RILA board of directors.

    Simon replaces Walmart vice chairman and president and CEO of global e-commerce and global sourcing Eduardo Castro-Wright on the board.

    The RILA board meets twice a year to discuss the issues facing retailers and to offer insight into the opportunities and challenges confronting the industry.

    The increased pace of merger and acquisition activity late in 2010, including some huge deals, suggests that 2011 will be an active year. Low interest rates, significant cash on many firms’ balance sheets, and stock prices that are low enough to attract buyers but high enough to move sellers off the sidelines all reinforce that possibility.

    Conshohocken, Pa. -- Metro Commercial Real Estate said Monday that Roy Perez-Daple has joined the company, where he will expand the firm’s national retailer advisory services as well as pursue strategic landlord opportunities.

  • Francis holds key to Canadian conundrum

    Conventional wisdom seems to be that Target will be as successful in Canada as it has been in the United States, following last week’s bombshell announcement that the company would enter the market via an acquisition. Target said it would acquire leasehold interests in 220 Zellers stores from the Hudson’s Bay Company, and during 2013 and 2014 it would open between 100 and 150 of the locations as Target stores.

  • Yankee Candle names international president

    South Deerfield, Mass. -- The Yankee Candle Co. said Tuesday that John Fontana has joined the company as president of the international division.

    The candle retailer and manufacturer also said that Hope Margala Klein has been promoted to senior VP brand design and innovation.

  • Wal-Mart denies that it will open Chilean, Argentine banks

    Bentonville, Ark. -- Wal-Mart Stores on Tuesday denied reports by a Santiago, Chile, newspaper that it would consider opening banks in Chile and Argentina.

    The reports are “completely untrue,” Wal-Mart spokesman Kevin Gardner told Bloomberg in an e-mailed response to questions.

  • Marcus & Millichap announces promotion

    Dallas -- Marcus & Millichap Real Estate Investment Services said it has named Jason S. Vitorino senior director of the firm’s National Retail Group in Dallas.

    Vitorino joined Marcus & Millichap’s sales intern program in September 2003. He became an agent in April 2004. During his career, Vitorino has closed more than 200 transactions valued at over $660 million, according to the company.
