  • Walgreens shuffles executive ranks

    Walgreens Boots Alliance is making a number of changes to its senior management roles and responsibilities as part of what the company is calling the “next phase of evolution.”
     
    Alex Gourlay, executive VP of Walgreens Boots Alliance and president of Walgreens, and Ornella Barra, executive VP of Walgreens Boots Alliance and president and chief executive of global wholesale and international retail, have been appointed to the role of co-CEOs.
     

  • Bebe launches new global growth initiative

    Bebe Stores Inc. is building upon efforts to turn itself around and boost its international presence.
     
    The specialty apparel retailer, which launched a China growth plan in 2015, has entered into a joint venture with Bluestar Alliance LLC to license its brand domestically and globally. Bebe has received $35 million in connection with the formation of the joint venture.
     

  • Another retail CFO moves on

    Another day, another finance chief at a well-known retailer is leaving.

    Jane Hamilton Nielsen, CFO at Coach Inc., will be departing the company to pursue another opportunity. In order to facilitate a smooth transition, Nielsen is expected to stay into August 2016. The company is commencing a search for her permanent successor with Crist Kolder Associates. Andrea Shaw Resnick, global head of investor relations and corporate communications, will be appointed interim CFO until a permanent appointment is made.

    The do-it-yourself vertical is all about getting things done correctly, and Ace Hardware International is building the proper foundation for seamless commerce.
     
    Ace will implement Blue Ridge supply chain planning technology to unify and optimize supply chain planning functions across its global distribution centers and retail locations.
     

  • Survey ranks fastest emerging global retail markets

    Retailers looking for global opportunities in emerging markets should head to Asia, particularly China, according to a just-released survey.   

    China ranks as the top country in A.T. Kearney’s 2016 Global Retail Development Index (GRDI), followed by India, whose high market potential, fast growth, improved regulatory environment, and ease of doing business pulled it up to second in the rankings. (See end of article for top 30 rankings.)

  • U.S. shoppers bid Joe Fresh stores adieu

    Canadian retail conglomerate The Loblaw Cos. Inc. is pulling up stakes on store-based operations of its Joe Fresh banner in the U.S.

    According to the Financial Post, Loblaw has closed the final remaining U.S. Joe Fresh store in the SoHo neighborhood of New York, and also no longer distributes the apparel brand through J.C. Penney stores in the States.

  • French retailer opens start-up competition with U.S. tech accelerator

    Galeries Lafayette Group is the latest retail entity to launch its own tech accelerator program.

    The French specialty retail conglomerate, which operates the Galeries Lafayette, BHV Marais, Royal Quartz, Louis Pion and Didier Guérin banners, is partnering with Silicon Valley-based technology accelerator and venture fund Plug and Play in the effort. The three-month program aims to develop an integrated platform to assist startups focused on the fashion and retail sectors. It will include access to venture capitalists, mentors, and Fortune 500 companies.

  • Department store retailer continues Canadian expansion

    Nordstrom has opened its second full-line store In Toronto.   The department store retailer opened a three-level, 199,000-sq.-ft. store at Yorkdale Shopping Centre on Oct. 21. It is the company's second location in Toronto, with the first, at CF Toronto Eaton Centre, opening in September.
