  • Cabela's reports rise in sales and profits for Q2, to ramp up store openings

    Sidney, Neb. -- Cabela's reported Thursday that net income for second quarter rose to $22.3 million, from $19.4 million in the year-ago quarter.

    Total revenue increased 7.7% to $562.1 million, and same-store sales increased 4.4%.

  • CEO Duke talks taxes in D.C.

    Wal-Mart Stores president and CEO Mike Duke was on Capitol Hill this week making the case for modernizing the U.S. tax code even as Democratic and Republican lawmakers continued to engage in brinksmanship over what all agree is a disturbing level of national indebtedness. Duke testified before the United States Senate Committee on Finance, which was holding hearings on CEO perspectives on how the tax code affects hiring, businesses and economic growth.   • Build-a-Bear Workshop narrows loss in Q2

    St. Louis -- Build-A-Bear Workshop reported Thursday that it narrowed its loss in the quarter ended July 2 to $6.7 million, compared with a loss of $8.5 million in the year-ago period.

    The retailer increased total revenue 10% to $81.8 million, and consolidated same-store sales 7.1%.

    The retailer cited improved efficiencies and reduced expenses for the performance improvements.

  • Food inflation to benefit comps in months ahead

    American consumers may not like inflation, but retailers are enjoying the favorable impact rising prices have on their same-store sales calculations. It was evident last month when retailers reported healthy comp increases and more of the same could be in store for July as it appears retailers are effectively passing through increased prices to shoppers.

  • Tommy Hilfiger names former Gap Asia Pacific president as its new Asia chief

    Amsterdam -- The Tommy Hilfiger Group said Wednesday it has named John Ermatinger as CEO of the company's Asia business, effective Aug. 1.

    Ermatinger was previously president of Gap Asia Pacific for two years and president of Gap Japan for three years. Under his leadership, Gap successfully launched the brand in China.

  • Amazon posts record-setting 51% increase in Q2 sales, profits drop

    Seattle -- Amazon reported Tuesday that sales for the quarter ended June 30 soared 51% to $9.9 billion.

    Profits dipped 8% to $191 million from $207 million on surging operating costs, but still beat Wall Street expectations.

  • Delhaize completes Delta Maxi acquisition

    Brussels, Belgium -- Belgian supermarket retailer Delhaize Group said Wednesday that it has completed the previously announced acquisition of Serbian retailer Delta Maxi.

    Combined with its existing operations in Greece and Romania, Delhaize is now, with this transaction, considered a leading retail force in Southeastern Europe.

  • Jones Group Q2 net income falls on acquisition expense, beats Street

    New York City -- The Jones Group reported Wednesday that second-quarter earnings dropped almost 80% to $5.2 million, compared with $25.7 million in the year-ago period. The retailer and manufacturer, whose brands include Nine West and Anne Klein, cited expenses related to the acquisition of U.K. luxury footwear retailer Kurt Geiger for the poor earnings performance but results still exceeded Wall Street estimates.

    Revenue for the quarter increased 3% to $887.4 million, just edging analysts’ expected $887.2 million.
