    Total losses attributed to retail shrinkage hit $34.5 billion last year, “positioning retail crime as the largest form of property crime,” according to Dr. Richard Hollinger, professor of criminology, law and society, University of Florida, Gainesville, Fla. And it shows no signs of easing anytime soon. Indeed, the rate of shrink remains on a five-year climb, according to the Loss Prevention Research Council (LPRC), Gainesville, Fla.

  • Consumer confidence tumbles in December

    Washington, D.C. -- A report issued Thursday by the Conference Board said that its consumer confidence index fell sharply in December to 65.1 from 75.1 in November, impacted by fears of tax increases and impending government spending cuts.

    The fall in confidence is the second straight decline and the lowest level since August.

    The survey showed that consumers are slightly more optimistic about current business conditions and hiring. But their outlook for the next six months deteriorated to its lowest level since 2011.

  • Majority of workers concerned fiscal cliff will lead to layoffs

    Woodcliff Lake, N.J. -- Seventy-four percent of workers report they are concerned that the U.S. fiscal cliff will lead to layoffs, according to a survey released Thursday by career transition and talent development consulting firm Lee Hecht Harrison.

    In December, the firm surveyed more than 200 workers throughout the U.S. via an online poll asking, “Are you concerned that the U.S. fiscal cliff will lead to layoffs in your organization?” The results were as follows:
    Very much 40%; Moderately 22%; 
Slightly 12%; Not at all 26%.

  • Murphy Oil announces deal with Wal-Mart for 200 fuel stations

    El Dorado, Ark. -- Murphy Oil USA announced Wednesday it has entered into an agreement with Wal-Mart Stores Inc. for 200 new fuel stations in the midwestern and southeastern U.S.

    According to the agreement, Murphy Oil will build more than 200 new fuel stations at existing Wal-Mart Super Centers over the next three years.

    Steven Cosse, president and CEO, Murphy Oil Corp., said the agreement with Wal-Mart is a significant step forward for the pair’s long-term relationship.

  • Ollie’s Bargain Outlet

    At the back of the new Ollie’s Bargain Outlet in Reading, Pa., is a self-serve café setup with a sign that proclaims: “The Pot’s Always On. Have a free cup of coffee on us, and if you like, use two sugars … it’s been a pretty good year!”

    From the sounds of things, there hasn’t been a bad year since the first Ollie’s opened in Mechanicsburg, Pa., in 1982.

    Ever since the financial crisis, consumer confidence has labored to regain strength, and spending has been correspondingly subpar. So it’s not surprising that retailers have been extremely reluctant to make big capital outlays. But now there are signs that consumers are loosening their purse strings and, as they do, momentum is building among retailers to renew capital spending on certain projects.
