  • Tucker Development is bringing ShopRite to Springfield Avenue Marketplace

    Newark, N.J. -- Tucker Development Corp. has signed a deal with Wakefern Food Corp. retail cooperative to bring a 67,000-sq.-ft. ShopRite grocery store to Springfield Avenue Marketplace in Newark, N.J.

    Wakefern is the merchandising and distribution arm for ShopRite stores.

    The new ShopRite will anchor the 125,000-sq.-ft. center set to break ground this fall. When complete, the center will serve approximately 280,000 Newark residents, 180,000 employees and 60,000 college students and faculty.

  • New sales team leader for Balance Innovations

    LENEXA, Kan. — A little more than two weeks after bringing in former Safeway executive Steve Rempel as its new president and CEO, Balance Innovations has named Jay Atkinson its EVP of business development. 

    In this role, Atkinson will be responsible for managing the national sales team, as well as the development and execution of the company's sales strategy.

  • Report: Retail rent growth set to return

    Atlanta -- Jones Lang LaSalle Retail Group said that vacancy rates should fall far enough to enable some landlords in every U.S. market to demand slightly higher rents — at some point over the next six months.

  • Limited Brands May net sales rise

    COLUMBUS, Ohio — Limited Brands reported net sales of $737 million for May 2013, an increase of nearly 10% from $672 million for the same period last year. The company reported a comparable store sales increase of 3% for May from the same period last year. 

    For the 17-week period ended June 1, the company reported net sales of $3 billion, an increase of 6% from $2.8 billion for the same period last year. Meanwhile, comparable store sales increased 3% for the 17-week period, versus the same period last year. 

  • Ascena Retail Group Q3 profit down 37% amid charges

    Suffern, N.Y. -- Ascena Retail Group Inc. reported its fiscal third-quarter net income dropped nearly 37% amid costs related to its acquisition of Charming Shoppes and a charge tied to debt extinguishment. The chain also lowered its full-year earnings forecast.

    Net income slipped to $31.2 million for the quarter that ended April 27, from $49.4 million in the same quarter a year ago.

    Revenue rose nearly 46% to $1.14 billion, boosted by the company’s acquisitions of the Lane Bryant and Catherines chains. Same-store sales fell 4%.

  • Stein Mart’s May sales rise

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Linens and ladies’ casual and career sportswear buoyed Stein Mart’s total sales for May. The company reported total sales of $107.3 million for the month, an increase of 3.6% from $103.6 million for May last year. 

    Comparable store sales increased 8.2%.

  • Brixx Wood Fired Pizza comes to The Avenue East Cobb

    Atlanta -- Construction of a new Brixx Wood Fired Pizza is underway at The Avenue East Cobb in Marietta, Ga., just north of Atlanta. Cousins Properties manages the development.

    Approximately 3,600 sq. ft., the new Brixx will seat about 140 inside and 45 outside on a patio. Franchisees Nick and Raj Vadgama will open the new restaurant, the first Brixx in Georgia, in the fall.

    Brixx has also announced plans for a second franchised Georgia location in the Avenue Peachtree City, another Cousins property.

  • Former Mars marketing exec to McCormick

    SPARKS, Md. — McCormick has appointed Lawrence Kurzius as the company’s president, global consumer and chief administrative officer. 

    In this role, Kurzius will be charged with McCormick's consumer business globally as well as several of the company's corporate functions, including IT, supply chain, R&D and quality assurance. Kurzius will also chair the Global Consumer Strategy Council in his new role.
