    SANTA ANA, Calif. — AlignMed, a developer of wellness wear, has appointed Robert J. Meers as the company’s CEO. He will be charged with driving the company’s growth and strategic direction.

  • Burlington benefits from cold Q1

    BURLINGTON, N.J. — Burlington Coat Factory was the beneficiary of an unseasonably cool first quarter that resulted in soft sales at some other retailers.

    The company’s net sales increased 8.4% to nearly $1.1 billion for the quarter from $982 million for the quarter ended April 28, 2012. Comparative store sales increased 3.4%.

  • Regency Centers breaks ground at Juanita Tate Marketplace

    Los Angeles -- Regency Centers Corp. has broken ground on Juanita Tate Marketplace, a $21 million grocery-anchored shopping center in underserved South Central Los Angeles.

    Anchors include a 42,500-sq.-ft. Northgate Gonzalez Market and a 14,576-sq.-ft. CVS/pharmacy. The remaining space will include small shops, quick-service restaurants and a 1050-sq.-ft. educational community center operated by Concerned Citizens of South Central Los Angeles, a community revitalization group once led by Juanita Tate, who died in 2004.

  • PwC: CPG retailers and providers use IT to connect with customers

    Washington, D.C. -- Retailers and consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies are increasingly using technology to better connect with customers and drive profits, according to a new study from the Grocery Manufacturers Association and PwC US.

    Results of “Growth Strategies: Unlocking the Power of the Consumer” indicate that despite generally slowing retail net sales growth in 2012, food, beverage and household products companies experienced positive net sales growth of 7%t, 5.5% and 3.2%, respectively.

  • Deloitte Consumer Spending Index rises in May

    New York – Improvements in real home prices, initial unemployment claims and real wages drove an increase in the Deloitte Consumer Spending Index last month. The Index, which comprises four components of tax burden, initial unemployment claims, real wages and real home prices, rose slightly in May to 4.27 from a reading of 4.12 the previous month.

  • KPMG: Retailers ready to spend on expansion, IT

    New York -- Despite continuing economic uncertainty, new data from KPMG indicates retailers are ready to invest capital to spur growth this year. The 2013 KPMG Retail Outlook Survey shows that 85% of retail executives expect capital spending will increase or remain the same during the next year. When asked where they will increase spending most, executives most frequently cited geographic expansion (61%), IT (40% and advertising and marketing/branding (24%).

  • 7-Eleven stores raided in illegal immigrant scam

    New York -- Nine owners and managers of 7-Eleven stores across Long Island (New York) and in Virginia were charged on Monday of harboring and hiring dozens of illegal immigrants and paying them using sham Social Security numbers.

  • Old Man Winter chills Toys’R’Us Q1 sales

    WAYNE, N.J. — Lingering cold weather and soft sales in its electronics and entertainment categories caused Toys”R”Us’ net and comparable store sales for first quarter ended May 4 to dip. 

    The company reported net sales of $2.4 billion, a decrease of nearly 8% from $2.6 billion for the quarter a year ago. The decline in net sales for the quarter was primarily attributable to a decrease in comparable store net sales, as well as a foreign currency translation impact of $67 million.
