  • Amazon taps Bezos advisor for important new role

    A key advisor to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has been appointed to a new position in the company — one that reflects its continued focus on delivery infrastructure.   Maria Renz, who served as technical advisor to Bezos for the past two years, has been named to the new role of VP of delivery experience, reported Recode.   
  • These three retailers are tops in corporate reputation

    Another corporate ranking, another first place finish by Amazon.   The online giant came out on top in Harris Poll’s annual corporate reputation rankings report. The poll measures the reputations of the 100 most visible companies in the United States as perceived by the general public.        
  • Target to help health-related start-ups ‘takeoff’

    Target is prepping for another program aimed at start-ups, specifically those focused on health and wellness.   The new program, called “Target Takeoff,” supports health- and wellness-related start-ups through a “mini-accelerator” effort that will help young companies develop and connect with the major retailers in town.  
  • Torrid to open stores in five Cafaro malls

    Women’s plus-size retailer Torrid will open locations in five Cafaro Malls: Eastwood Mall (Niles, Ohio); Governor’s Square Mall (Clarksville, Tennessee); Huntington Mall (Barboursville, West Virginia), Millcreek Mall (Erie, Pennsylvania); and Spotsylvania Towne Centre (Fredericksburg, Virginia).     The 3,500-sq.-ft. stores are all expected to be up and running by June. Torrid, founded in 2001, operates more than 400 locations across 36 states.  
  • SPECS to put a spotlight on ADA compliance

    The Americans with Disabilities Act with be the focus of a special, double-session at Chain Store Age’s upcoming SPECS conference (March 12-14, at the Gaylord Palms, Kissimmee, Florida).     Presented by Joan Stein, president of Joan Stein Consulting and one of the nation’s leading ADA experts, the session will examine non-compliance issues, the impact of after-construction changes, how to avoid mitigation costs, and remediation and business interruption.  
  • Check out Barneys’ new window displays

    Just days after it named its first-ever female CEO, Barneys is devoting the window displays at its uptown and downtown Manhattan flagships to an initiative celebrating women’s empowerment.   The windows are part of a new campaign launched by the Barneys New York Foundation, the charitable arm of the luxury specialty retailer. Entitled “We Will Be,” the initiative will run through the end of February to coincide with New York Fashion Week.   
  • Why controversy is good for Starbucks

    Starbucks Corp.’s plan to hire 10,000 refugees over the next five years (in its stores in 75 countries around the globe) has proved to be one of the socially progressive retailer’s most controversial moves to date.   The initiative, a response to President Trump’s executive order barring refugees from seven Muslim-majority countries, has many conservatives and Trump supporters calling for a boycott of the coffee chain.
