  • Chico's names new COO

    FORT MEYERS, Fla. — Chico's FAS announced Tuesday that it has appointed Kent Kleeberger to the position of EVP and COO.

    Kleeberger will replace Jeffrey Jones, who is retiring from the company, effective March 7. Jones will serve as part-time consultant to the company during a transition period.

    Kleeberger, 58, has served as EVP finance and CFO of Chico's FAS since joining the company in November 2007. Previously, he was SVP and CFO for Dollar Tree Stores.

  • Bruce Foods CEO to serve on GMA's board

    NEW IBERIA, La. — The Grocery Manufacturers Association has tapped the leader of a food manufacturer to serve on its board of directors.

    J.S. "Si" Brown, president and CEO of Bruce Foods, will serve on GMA's board. Brown has held led the company, which specializes in manufacturing Cajun and Tex-Mex products, since 1973.

  • Toys "R" Us kicks off fundraising campaign for Autism Speaks

    WAYNE, N.J. -- Toys "R" Us is kicking off an in-store fundraising campaign to benefit North America's largest autism science and advocacy organization.

    Now through April 30, monetary donations will be collected at all Toys "R" Us and Babies "R" Us stores and online to benefit Autism Speaks.

  • Macy's Q4 profit rises 50% on strong holiday selling season

    Cincinnati -- Macy’s reported Tuesday that net income jumped 50% in the fourth quarter ended Jan. 29, and projected its full-year profit would meet Wall Street expectations.

    After a strong holiday season, the retailer earned $667 million in the fourth quarter, compared with $445 million in the year-ago period.

    Revenue rose 5% to $8.27 billion, just missing analysts’ average forecast for $8.28 billion. Same-store sales increased 4.3%.

  • Housing challenges impact La-Z-Boy's 3Q sales

    MONROE, Mich. -- La-Z-Boy reported that sales for the third quarter declined 4.3%, partly due to ongoing challenges related to housing and consumer confidence. Net income for the fiscal 2011 third quarter was 19 cents per share, which includes a 6-cent tax benefit, versus 21 cents per share in last year's third quarter.

    The retail segment's sales increased 9.2%, and it experienced its eighth consecutive quarterly improvement of operating margin performance compared with the prior year, the company reported.

  • Aldi takes a bite out of the Big Apple

    NEW YORK — Discount grocer Aldi has opened its first-ever New York City-area store in the borough of Queens.

    The store, which is located in Rego Park, marks the first of three grocery stores the company plans to open in New York, including new locations in the Bronx and Bay Shore, Long Island.

    Aldi, which offers a limited assortment of items, said it will bring its standard floor plan to Queens, which includes wider-than-typical 8-ft. aisles.
