  • Kroger mid-south div. pres. Hackett retires

    LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kroger's mid-south division president John Hackett is retiring, after 50 years of service with the company. Hackett began his career with Kroger in 1963 as a store clerk in London, Ohio, while working his way through college at The Ohio State University.

  • Walgreens mobilizes aid for Okla. tornado survivors

    DEERFIELD, Ill. — Responding to Monday’s tornado in the Oklahoma City area, Walgreens mobilized increased shipments of essential supplies to its area stores, made an initial donation of three semi-trailers of food, water and first aid supplies to the Oklahoma chapter of the American Red Cross and offered customers an opportunity to make donations at its Oklahoma drugstores.

  • GameStop sales fall, but mobile sales explode

    Grapevine, Texas – While overall sales for GameStop fell significantly during first quarter 2013, the video game retailer can take some solace in a substantial boom in mobile sales. Total sales of $1.87 billion were about 7% below $2 billion in sales recorded during the first quarter of last year. However, mobile sales grew an impressive 290% to $46.8 million and digital receipts increased 47%. Net earnings of $54.6 million were 25% below net earnings of $72.5 million a year earlier.

  • Virtual Piggy upgrades tech to comply with FTC

    LOS ANGELES — Virtual Piggy, an online service that allows parents to monitor their children's online shopping behavior, has upgraded its security service to ease compliance with Federal Trade Commission regulations.

    The security service offers parental verification as well as transactional capability, which allows merchants to comply with the updated amendments to Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.

  • Cato Corp. has down quarter

    Charlotte, N.C. – Specialty women’s apparel and accessories retailer Cato Corp. reported declining sales and net income during first quarter 2013. Sales dropped 2% from $272.8 million to $267.2 million, while net income fell 3% from $31.7 million to $30.8 million. Same-store sales also declined compared to the same quarter a year earlier, by 5%.

  • Campbell acquires Plum Organics

    CAMDEN, N.J. — Campbell Soup Company has entered into an agreement to acquire Plum Organics, a provider of premium, organic foods and snacks that serve the nutritional needs of babies, toddlers and children. 

    The company is based in Emeryville, Calif. Plum is the No. 2 brand of organic baby food in the U.S. and is currently the No. 4 baby food brand overall. Baby food is an approximately $2 billion category in the United States. From 2010 to 2012, the premium and organic segments grew at an average annual rate of 43%.

  • Consumer confidence rises on economic optimism

    New York -- A Thursday report by Bloomberg said that U.S. consumer confidence for the week ended May 19 advanced, indicating that Americans’ outlook on the economy is optimistic.

    The weekly Bloomberg Consumer Comfort Index increased to minus 29.4 from minus 30.2 the prior week. A measure of personal finances was positive for a sixth consecutive week, the longest stretch in more than five years, according to Bloomberg.
