Amazon is coming to South Africa.
Amazon is providing e-commerce services in a new market.
The e-tail giant is launching Amazon.co.za, its South African digital storefront, available via the Amazon shopping app or desktop or mobile browser. First announced in October 2023, the site allows customers in South Africa to browse and shop from a selection of local and international brands across 20 different product categories, with same-day and next-day delivery.
For products fulfilled by Amazon, customers will receive free delivery on their first order, followed by free delivery for subsequent orders above 500 South African rand, or about $27. Customers will receive status updates on every step of their order via the Meta WhatsApp messaging app.
South African Amazon customers can make returns within 30 days via options including home pickup and self-drop. Local customer support is provided via phone, email, and live chat.
Product categories include consumer electronics, sporting equipment, toys, home, and small kitchen appliances. The site will sell international brands such as Apple, Sony, HP, LEGO, Chicco, Maybelline, Pampers, Neutrogena and Johnson’s.
Amazon is also offering local brands from independent South African sellers of all sizes, including Amanda-Jayne, King Kong Leather, Masodi, and Tiger Lily. Independent South African sellers have been able to register their business with Amazon since October 2023, and independent sellers have access to onboarding tools, payment processing solutions, promotional features, and sales reports and analytics.
Amazon has partnered with South African non-profit organization goGOGOgo to offering the opportunity to package eligible products in handmade gift bags. Made from recycled plastic and handsewn, these gift bags directly support local businesses and provide income generation opportunities for families in need.
"We are excited to launch Amazon.co.za, along with thousands of independent sellers in South Africa. We provide customers with great value, broad selection—including international and local products—and a convenient delivery experience," said Robert Koen, managing director of Sub-Saharan Africa, Amazon in a corporate blog post.
"From today, customers can count on Amazon.co.za for a stress-free shopping experience, fast and reliable delivery, access to 3,000 pickup points, 24/7 customer support, and easy returns. Customers will also enjoy free delivery on their first order,” Koen said in the blog post.
"Building a strong relationship with South African brands and businesses—small or large—is incredibly important to us. We want Amazon.co.za to be the place where they can reach millions of customers. Today is only the start of Amazon.co.za. We will continue to improve and enhance our shopping experience to serve customers and sellers across South Africa."
