Amazon expands same-day perishable grocery delivery
Customers in a wide range of communities across the U.S. can now include perishable items in their same-day Amazon delivery orders.
The online giant is building on its August 2025 rollout of same-day delivery of fresh perishable groceries to more than 1,000 cities and towns by more than doubling the service’s reach to more than 2,300 cities and towns.
With the newest expansion, customers in areas of Boise, Idaho; Salt Lake City; Fort Collins, Colo.; Omaha, Neb.; Sugar Land, Tex.; Des Moines, Iowa; Kennesaw, Ga.; Gaithersburg, Md., and more can include grocery items in their same-day Amazon delivery orders. (The summer launch included areas of Seattle, Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, Miami, and New York City.)
Amazon is on schedule with its original plans to expand the initiative to more than 2,300 areas across the U.S. by the end of 2025. The company plans to continue growing the availability of same-day grocery delivery next year.
How it works
In the locations where the service is now available, customers can order "thousands" of fresh groceries — ranging from produce and dairy to meat and seafood — alongside everyday items such as household essentials, electronics, fashion products, and home and garden items with their same-day delivery orders. Of the "millions" of items available for same-day delivery, Amazon said the top bestseller is a banana bunch, followed by Haas avocados, strawberries; Honeycrisp apples and limes.
Prime members can receive same-day delivery for free on orders over $25 in most areas. If an order doesn’t meet the minimum, Prime members can receive same-day delivery for a $2.99 fee. For other customers, the service is available with a $12.99 fee, regardless of order size.
Amazon has said its specialized temperature-controlled fulfillment network ensures customers receive fresh, high-quality perishable grocery items, with every item undergoing a six-point quality check upon arrival and before leaving for delivery.
Temperature-sensitive products are delivered in insulated bags to ensure items remain at appropriate temperatures, with the bags recyclable in most curbside recycling programs. The service is designed to complement Amazon's existing grocery delivery offerings — including Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods Market and a variety of local grocery and specialty retailers on Amazon.com.
Customers respond positively
According to Amazon, perishable grocery sales have grown 30 times since January 2025 as more customers use same-day delivery for access to fresh groceries and customers who add fresh groceries to their same-day delivery orders shop about twice as often as those who don’t.
Since August 2025, Amazon says it has expanded the fresh grocery selection available for same-day delivery by more than 30%, including items from its Whole Foods organic and natural supermarket subsidiary and its recently introduced Amazon Grocery private label assortment.

"The selection, value, and convenience of same-day delivery from Amazon makes grocery shopping that much easier for families across the country," said Doug Herrington, CEO of worldwide Amazon stores, in a corporate blog post. "We're seeing customers combine their fresh grocery orders with their regular Amazon purchases, like electronics, gifts, clothes, and household essentials, in ways that make their lives easier and save them valuable time."
