Southeastern Grocer, Chico’s and Chipotle are among the top 100 U.S. companies with the most loved workplaces.

That’s according to Newsweek’s 2022 Most Loved Workplaces list, done in collaboration with the Best Practice Institute (BPI), a leadership development and benchmark research company. The results were determined after surveying more than 1.4 million employees from businesses with workforces varying in size from 50 to more than 10,000.

A total of 11 retail and restaurant brands (see end of article) made the list. The two top companies were Dell Technologies and SAP America.

"The companies on this list represent the best at placing love at the center of their employee's experience," said Louis Carter, CEO, Best Practice Institute. "The number of applications this year and analysis of survey data reinforces our original findings that love is the strongest predictor of the strength of a company's culture, employee engagement, and satisfaction."

The 12 retail and restaurant brands on Newsweek’s 2022 100 Most Loved Workplaces 2022 list are listed below, with their ranking and “loved because” blurb.

12. Bark: Bark employees can enjoy a dog-friendly office environment. Yup, they’re obsessed with their dogs in New York City. Free health care for their canine friends? Of course there is.

26. Southeastern Grocers:  Lots of support at the Winn-Dixie parent via training development programs like SEG University. The “MyWellness” platform focuses on issues like financial, career, social and community well-being

33. Sweetgreen: Daily “Sweettalks” ensure two-way communication and help make sure that the business is running smoothly. Employees are provided a clear path to management in a short time frame.

40. First Watch: How are you feeling? A web-based application measures employee happiness; a five-question feedback tool asks workers to share experiences about the previous week to encourage change.

51. Price Smart: Continual training helps staff develop new skills—and gets them on an upwardly mobile career path. The membership warehouse firm provides employee subsidies for college and professional education.

53. Chico’s: Florida-based fashion firm loves collaboration. Get2Gethers randomly pair employees with an associate across the organization. The execs also hold listening sessions throughout the year.

65. Denny’s: All employees, regardless of skill set, are provided educational attainment programs. The “Share the Love” initiative is designed to give every host, cook, server and manager career guidance.

75. Madison Reed: Big, big, big on diversity. A committee developed by the San Francisco-based hair care company makes sure things like hiring, recognition and promotions all meet its inclusion standards.

83. Kendra Scott: Career goals are always in the spotlight. Employees kick off the first quarter with a goal session; performance conversations; and an “Alignment Day” to discuss goals, obstacles and pain points.

87. E.L.F. Cosmetics: Its “High Performance Teamwork” program provides feedback from workers on what behavior helps or hurts effectiveness.

89. Chipotle: All employees are trained in the Newport, California, restaurant chain’s code of ethics, which centers on respect and inclusion. Employees are also encouraged to give back to the communities they work in.

Methodology
To identify the top 100 companies for the Newsweek ranking, companies were evaluated and scored as follows: 35% of the initial score was based on employee survey responses; 25 percent was derived from analysis of external public ratings from sites such as Comparably, Careerbliss, Glassdoor, Indeed and Google; and 40% came from direct interviews with and written responses from company officials.

Newsweek then conducted additional research into every company on the list, as well as the top runners-up, to determine the final list of 100 companies and their ranking.
