1-800 Flowers named Adolfo Villagomez as CEO.

1-800 Flowers.com Inc. has named its first non-family member as CEO.

Adolfo Villagomez has been appointed CEO of the online gift platform, beginning May 12. He will succeed founder Jim McCann, who will remain executive chairman and be actively involved in the company. McCann was named CEO in July 2023, after his brother Christopher McCann stepped down for health reasons. (Jim McCann previously served as CEO of the company from inception through 2016.) The leadership move was announced as 1-800 Flowers reported a 12.6% revenue decline for its third quarter (ended March 30.)

Most recently, Villagomez served as CEO of Progress Residential, the largest private owner and operator of single-family rentals in over 40 U.S. markets. Prior to joining the company in May 2022, he served as president of The Home Depot’s online businesses and chief marketing officer for U.S. Retail where he was responsible for all digital activities including homedepot.com. Villagomez joined the home improvement retailer in 2014.

Earlier in his career, Villagomez was a partner at McKinsey and Company

In a statement, McCann said that Villagomez appointment “marks an exciting and historic new chapter for 1-800-Flowers.com as we shape the next generation of leadership.”

"Adolfo is the first person outside the McCann family to take on this role — something I did not take lightly,” he continued. “From our very first conversation, I recognized in him not only extraordinary business acumen, but also a deep passion and a genuine commitment to partnership with myself and our leadership team.”

Third Quarter

1-800Flowers reported a net loss of $178.2 million for its third quarter, compared with a net loss of $16.9 million in the year-ago period. Revenues declined across the company’s divisions, except for the BloomNet group, which offers business services to local florists.

“While we are deeply disappointed by the quarterly results, we are steadfast in our commitment to turning this underperformance around,” said McCann. “Our Celebrations Wave strategy marks a pivotal evolution for the company, integrating our innovative initiatives and brand assets into a sentiment-led ecosystem. We expect this strategy will not only help address the current challenges but also drive sustainable long-term growth, ensuring we continue to deepen connections and inspire heartfelt expressions among our customers.”
