Fans of the hit HBO fantasy series “Game of Thrones” can experience the show in a whole new way.
AT&T is partnering with HBO and virtual reality (VR) headset provider MagicLeap to provide an immersive encounter with monsters and characters from “Game of Thrones.” At AT&T flagship stores in Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco, customers will have the opportunity to wear a Magic Leap One VR headset and participate in a themed experience called “The Dead Must Die: A Magic Leap Encounter.”
Customers wearing the headset enter a virtual representation of the King’s Landing setting from the show. This transforms into what a press release calls an “ominous, icy scene that begs investigation.” Carrying a virtual torch, participants have interactive encounters with series figures such as wights and White Walkers.
The experience is designed specifically for use in AT&T stores. In addition to promoting the upcoming final season of “Game of Thrones,” it also serves as an introduction to the Magic Leap One headset, which AT&T will start selling at its flagships in conjunction. The virtual promotion will be available at the AT&T flagships in Boston April 1, Chicago April 3 and San Francisco April 6, and run through June 10. AT&T will also offer the VR experience at stores in Los Angeles and Dallas later in the month.
Walmart is running a similar immersive
VR promotion tied to the animated film “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” on a staggered schedule at 16 locations through April 9.
