Walmart takes its home installation offering online

8/29/2018
Walmart just made a big commitment to its installation services.

The discount giant now offers its online customers the option to purchase in-home installation and assembly services for merchandise, including furniture and electronics. The program is available through its partnership with home services provider Handy.

While placing an online order, customers can simultaneously book an installation service. Shoppers can book an appointment between 7 am and 11 p.m., seven days a week, and are sent a confirmation email with booking details, according to the Handy.com page on Walmart’s website.

Customers can also reschedule their service by clicking the 'Review Booking' button embedded in their confirmation email, or through the Handy app. Customers can download the app for iOS or Android devices.

Services are currently limited to indoor projects, such as assembling furniture and mounting televisions, among other tasks. All services are guaranteed, according to Handy.

Walmart already offers the installation program in-store. The service, which initially launched in March across 25 Atlanta-based Walmart stores, is currently expanding to more than 2,000 stores. The discounter expects to have the service available chainwide by September, according to Bloomberg.

The installation service has already facilitated over three million bookings nationwide, according to Walmart’s website.

The program helps Walmart compete with other retailers that also provide third-party installation partnerships. For example, Ikea introduced its TaskRabbit At-Home Assembly Service in a pilot in 2016. The company introduced the program online in select markets, and in six stores in the San Francisco and New York City area. The retailer said additional stores will add the service in 2018, including those in Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, Boston, Washington, D.C., and more.

Best Buy offers similar services through its Geek Squad. Amazon also features assembly services for merchandise including furniture, fitness equipment, and recreational items, including pool tables.
