Walmart makes another move to bolster online grocery deliveries

Walmart is bringing on a new partner to expand the breadth of its online grocery delivery service.

The discount giant is teaming up with San Francisco-based restaurant delivery service DoorDash to deliver groceries to more customers. It’s DoorDash’s first move beyond its core competency of restaurant delivery,

The partnership is being launched in the Atlanta metro area, with more markets in the coming months. It will help keep Walmart on pace to meet its goal of providing delivery service to more than 40% of households across the country by the end of the year, the discounter said.

Through the service, Walmart will leverage DoorDash’s delivery team, along with more than 18,000 of its own personal shoppers, to service “thousands of customers” in Atlanta. Personal shoppers must complete a three-week training program that will teach them how to select produce and the best cuts of meat.

As Atlanta customers complete their order online or through their Walmart app, they switch to the delivery tab, and select a delivery window at checkout. After orders have been picked by Walmart’s personal shoppers, a DoorDash associate, called a “Dasher,” retrieves the order from a Walmart store and delivers it to the customer within their specified delivery window.

Groceries can be delivered to customers as soon as the same day. Walmart’s Online Grocery Delivery requires a $9.95 fee and a $30 minimum.

The service augments Walmart’s online grocery pickup service that allows customers to pick up their online orders in stores without getting out of their cars. The service is now available in 1,200 stores, with nearly 30 locations in Atlanta. Another 1,000 locations will be added this year, according to Walmart.

Walmart is not the only company creating partnerships to bolster their online grocery programs. Amazon offers free two-hour delivery from Whole Foods Market through Prime Now in seven cities, and will continue expanding the service across the U.S. throughout the rest of the year.

Meanwhile, companies including Albertsons. Kroger and Aldi are joining forces with Instacart to expand their online deliver services.
