Schnucks unlocks code to better store performance
Schnucks Markets is upgrading both barcodes and barcode scanners to improve store operations.
Schnucks is transitioning from 1D to 2D barcodes and scanners to embed additional data into barcodes to ensure accurate data capture while enhancing store productivity and efficiency. As part of this shift, the family-owned supermarket retailer is deploying Zebra data capture, mobile computing and printing solutions to increase associate productivity and improve the customer experience.
Schnucks is utilizing Zebra’s MP7000 grocery scanner scale and DS8178 cordless scanners to reduce double-scans and improve checkout speeds. The MP7000 can capture virtually every electronic and printed barcode in any condition, as well as GS1 Stacked DataBar barcodes for fresh products. The retailer also uses the Zebra QLn320 mobile printer for printing of consistent shelf labels that can be scanned across all stores.
In the back end of the store, associates leverage Android-based Zebra TC70, TC51 and TC20 mobile computers running the proprietary Schnucks Shelf Management (ShelfMan) application to manage store inventory, order products and transfer items between locations. The TC70 and TC51 are used by employees throughout the store, while the TC20 is used in the pharmacy.

Schnucks is on a mission to streamline store operations and customer experience with leading-edge technology. The grocer also recently deployed “Tally” autonomous shelf-scanning robots in at least 15 stores. The robots traverse store floors three times per day, scanning approximately 35,000 products per sweep, giving Schnucks more accurate, frequent and comprehensive insights into product flow and in-store operations.
Schnucks operates 118 stores in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Iowa.
