A discount giant is taking steps to improve the quality of its produce as the merchandise travels across the supply chain.
Walmart is developing a machine — named Eden —that inspects fruits and vegetables for bruises, discoloration, and other defects that make them unfit to sell, according to
Business Insider.Eden, which is in the early stages of development, digitally records defects and rejects produce that doesn't pass USDA and Walmart quality requirements. Upgrades are underway that will enable the technology to automatically scan images of produce coming through the distribution centers, and compare those images to a library of acceptable and unacceptable versions of produce, the report explained.
According to Parvez Musani,VP of supply chain technology engineering at Walmart Labs, the technology was installed at its 43 food-distribution centers in January 2017, and has already saved the company $86 million.
Over the next five years, Eden is expected to save Walmart $2 billion through a reduction in food waste, the report said.
