Report: Online giant designing its own sportswear line

Amazon is eyeing its next private-label category.

The online giant is partnering with two of the biggest athletic-apparel suppliers to create a new private-label sportswear line. While the project is in the early stages, Amazon expects the line to fill in inventory gaps across its existing private label categories, according to Bloomberg.

One company working with Amazon is Makalot Industrial Co. The manufacturer, which produces clothing for Gap Inc., Uniqlo and Kohl’s Corp., is already making apparel for the Amazon line. The online retailer is also working with Eclat Textile Co., which works with Nike, Lululemon Athletica and Under Armour, the report said.

According to Bloomberg, both manufacturers are producing small amounts of products for Amazon as part of a trial. However, long-term contracts haven’t yet been signed.
