Report: A new two-legged robot is walking onto the home delivery scene

2/10/2017

A group of engineers from Oregon State University think it has a solution to solve the home delivery puzzle.

Funded by a $1 million, 16-month grant from DARPA, the experimental research arm of the Department of Defense, the team created a new walking robot named Cassie. While this is not the first robot to tackle home deliveries, this first iteration is said to be sturdier than its robotic comrades, including an already-functioning unit from Starship Technologies, ReCode said.

The design is the successor of the university’s ATRIAS robot, which was introduced two years ago. However, Cassie’s hip joints and motorized ankles make it more steerable and provide a larger range of motion. The robot is already serving a small number of customers, ReCode said.
