Report: Amazon targets Boston for its newest business office

An online giant could be setting up shop in Beantown.

Amazon is considering leasing a massive office in Boston’s Seaport District. If the deal closes, the office will create jobs for at least 2,000 more employees over the next few years, according to the Boston Globe.

According to the report, Amazon filed documents this week to rent a building in the planned Seaport Square project, with an option to lease a second neighboring building to scale its growth. Developer WS Development said it could start construction on the first building this summer, and have it ready in 2021.

If the deal is approved, it would nearly triple the e-commerce giant’s workforce in Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts, making Amazon one of the region’s biggest private employers, the report said.

The office will not qualify as Amazon’s second North American headquarters, a project the company is calling “HQ2.” Boston remains on the short list of 20 cities still vying for the chance to host the new headquarters.
