Report: Amazon India considers bolstering its private label portfolio

Amazon India is exploring a new category to expand its private label business — and directly compete with regional online rival, Flipkart.

The online giant, which has made an aggressive push into private label over the past year, is considering launching a separate house brand for certain large appliances as well as smaller appliances, two unnamed Amazon executives told LiveMint.

In the report, both sources said the idea follows a page from rival Flipkart’s playbook. The India-based online player sells small appliances under the MarQ label.

Amazon India VP Manish Tiwary said the company would look to aggressively expand its private label this year, with potential new category launches. However, he declined to specify the categories in which Amazon India is exploring, the report said.
