Online retailer open-sources 3-D code for home products

10/5/2016

Known for its technology innovation, Wayfair just made a big move.

The home furnishings pure play released its 3D model application program interface (API). This move gives developers access to more than 10,000 3D furniture and décor models available on the platform.

Besides being the first API launch for the company, “we are excited to be first to market with our world-class 3D model API for home furnishings,” Steve Conine, co-founder and co-chairman, Wayfair, said in a company statement.

The solution is one example of the extensive 3D model library Wayfair uses to fuel its ongoing innovation in photographic rendering, virtual and augmented reality. The company’s WayfairView and Patio Playground services, launched in June and August of this year, respectively, utilize the 3D models to create an elevated shopping experience for their consumers.

“Technology innovation is deeply engrained in Wayfair’s culture,” said Conine. “Through our team’s dedicated efforts to expand our 3D model library, we now have one of the largest 3D selections of any home décor company. We look forward to seeing future developments that stretch beyond the home space.”
