eBay launches ‘shoppable stories’ on Mashable

2/6/2018
eBay’s newest partnership enables Mashable readers to shop the online marketplace — without leaving the story they are reading.

The two companies are teaming up to create “shoppable stories.” By combining the Mashable editorial team’s recommendations with eBay’s consumer discovery technology, readers can now use eBay to shop, browse and purchase products matching those featured on Mashable – all without ever leaving the site.

Here’s how it works: Users can click on shopping tag icons — called eBay widgets — embedded within Mashable stories. As they click on these tags, customers can view, compare and buy the selections featured in the article on eBay’s global platform, according to a blog on eBay’s website.

All featured merchandise is independently selected by Mashable journalists. “If you buy something featured, we may earn an affiliate commission, which helps support our work,” according to Mashable journalist, Proma Khosla.

The service, which is available across the U.K. and United States, is being piloted by eBay’s Marketing Lab — a division that focuses on developing disruptive marketing solutions.

“By introducing the new eBay widget to Mashable, the team will be able to better understand the factors that matter most to buyers making purchases off the eBay platform, such as seller reputation and delivery time. Using learned consumer insights from the pilot, Marketing Lab aims to deliver scalable solutions that accelerate eBay’s growth,” the blog said.
