eBay wants its customers to reach for their Apple Pay mobile wallet when paying for merchandise.
Starting this fall, eBay will enable customers to use Apple Pay via the app or mobile Web when making purchases on the marketplace. The service will kick off on among a limited group of customers and sellers in the United States.
Shoppers will be able to complete their purchases within eBay’s platform, and the company will manage the payments. The program is expected to improve the shopping experience, enhance selling tools and streamline costs, according to eBay.
“Apple Pay is one of the most ubiquitous forms of payments, and provides users with an easy, fast and secure way to pay,” said Steve Fisher, senior VP of payments at eBay.
The company plans to make Apple Pay available to more customers in more regions, and on more items in the future, according to eBay.
The Apple Pay program coincides with eBay’s ongoing transition to an integrated payment system built by Amsterdam-based company Adyen. The new platform supports a more seamless payment experience, without the need to log into another website to pay, according to
Engadget.
However, Apple Pay will not be the only payment option that eBay embraces in the long-term.
“Managing the end-to-end payments experience on eBay’s marketplace is a key initiative for the company,” he said. “As we expand our new payments experience over the coming months, we look forward to offering our global customers many other forms of payments on our platform.”
The online marketplace plans to continue expanding its payments initiative throughout 2019, and expects to integrate a majority of its marketplace customers to its new payments experience by 2021, the company reported.
